glitches when using marquee tool and when zooming in and out

SOOO many times I have to close Photoshop and restart it because sometimes the marquee tool doesnt want to expand or the whole image will just turn black and I didn't do anything and can't undo it, or half the image will be covered by a black square when I zoom in, or a square that has white and black diagonal lines. This has been going on since I bought photoshop a few months ago.... Why am I paying for it if half the time I have to close my work and restart?? I have downloaded all the updates and updated my computer but the glitches have not been remedied.

Does turning off »Use Graphics Processor« in the Performance Preferences (Photoshop > Preferences > Performance > Graphic Processor Settings) and restarting Photoshop have any bearing on the issue?

What have you done for trouble-shooting so far?

Restoring Preferences after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved might be a good starting point:
