Could you please post a screenshot with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Channels, Options Bar, …) visible?

Can you not select the other image via Window > …?

I was working on a program/8.5 x11 document and somehow I opened a picture that I was editing and it opened in a new tab.

There appears to be only one image tab so I am unsure what you are talking about.

Os another image listed at the bottom of Window > …?

Do you even want to work with tabs? If not disable Photoshop > Preferences > Workspace > Open Images as Tabs and Photoshop > Preferences > Workspace > ENable Floating Document Window Docking.

I have most likely lost the work and I have started over again. I am fairly new to photoshop as well. I was placing multiple pictures to the artboard and somehow opened the pic up on a new tab. I cannot figure how to get back. I started with something like this. I had multiple pics on different layers on top of  flower background.

In this screenshot there are multiple tabs and you should be able to click one to bring that document to the foreground.

I am afraid you may need to pay closer attention and provide more detail to get more pertinent advice.

In any case I see that you are using Smart Objects.

Which is commendable as it provides for non-destructive editing options!

But maybe you inadvertently double-clicked an SO in the Layers Panel and the opened image obscuring the containing image threw you?

Yes, I must have double clicked and brought the pic on to a new tab. I cannot see any of the other pics or layers. Can I get back or should I start over? I have reinstalled photoshop as someone suggested but it did not work. Like I said I am fairly new so I do not know all of the terminology but I am so frustrated because I am under a deadline. Thanks anway. 🙂

Did you ever save the layered image?

Haave you checked under File > Open Recent if it is still listed?

In addition to seeing how many tabs are visible, another way to check how many images are open is to look under the Window menu. Underneath the last divider line under the Window menu is a list of all open images.
