How come when I rasterize a layer, the whole screen goes black?

Windows, Photoshop 19.1.5

Let's pretend I want to erase part of that rounded rectangle, and put my watermark into part of it.

So I want to erase a little section of it.

So it asks me if I want to rasterize that shape layer. I say yes.

Then the whole entire screen goes black.

You already have a Layer Mask added

Just paint on the Layer Mask with black as the foreground color, using a brush with hardness set to 100%, hold down shift key to draw a straight line

Have you tried

Photoshop > Preferences > Performance > Legacy Compositing

Does turning off »Use Graphics Processor« in the Performance Preferences (Photoshop > Preferences > Performance > Graphic Processor Settings) and restarting Photoshop have any bearing on the issue?

As for the technique itself:

I would recommend putting the Shape Layer into a Group and applying a Layer Mask to the Group instead of rasterising the Layer.

I'll have to study what you posted try it.
I don't understand what rasterizing is, except it lets me erase stuff. But Photoshop seems to want to warn me before I do it, like it's a scary thing. Maybe cause you can't change stuff after it's rasterized?

Thanks again and I'll try your method as soon as I can.

OH and one other thing, with the method you suggested, will I be able to have a transparent background under the erased part? In other words, I need the background to be transparent, and I'm going to replace part of the square with my watermark, with transparent behind my watermark.

Rasterizing a Shape Layer destroys the vector information and changes the Layer to pixel information.

It could be an issue with your GPU driver, can you post your Photoshop system info, in Photoshop go to Help > System Info and copy and paste the entire thing into this thread

Looks like Photoshop is not recognizing the type of GPU you have, also the driver is not up to date

Try downloading the most recent GPU driver from the Intel website, you can download this tool and it should update the driver for you

Also try updating Photoshop to version 19.1.8
