Question

How do I flatten a layer that has frame on it without the frame disappearing

Hello,

I'm trying to do something that should be fairly simple - that is place a frame (using the frame tool) around an image and then flatten the image so I can export it as a jpg.  Everytime I do this, the frame disappears.  The rest of the image/layers seem to be fine but the frame does not survive the flattening the image.  What am I missing here?

You do not have to flatten a layered document to save a jpeg. Save the jpeg and also save a PSD so you can easily edit the image in the future and not haves to redo all your work.   Save as  Jpeg, and save for web jpeg both will save a flat jpeg image file from a layered document. If you flatten your document you destroy your work its a destructive edited.

I do not use the Frame tool to frame images the tool has its share of problems. There are no problems framing images using layer mask.

Hi Clint:

Image > Flatten will flatten all floating layers to a background layer. For example, I am using a frame to clip the square spaceship image into a circle.

Before flattening:

After. The image looks the same, but I am down to one background layer.

What is going on with your image? Screenshots will help us help you faster.

Hello BarbBinder,

The problem is, the frame I've placed around the image disappears when I flatten the image and is no longer visible. I've tried using both a frame and a rectangle shape (per the embedded images) for my frame but both disappear when I either export as a jpg or flatten the image.

frame disappears when exporting as jpg or flattening

What is actual frame? I guess you have image on background layer and you are covering image with shape which shows you path while it is selected. That tiny dark line is not frame, it is path which is visible only inside Photoshop when shape layer is selected. If you want line around photo then you have numerous of options for such task like selection plus Edit > Stroke, shape without fill with stroke and so on...

Is this effect similar to what are you looking for?
