How to change checker background?

Simple question I hope...

When I use the eraser tool on an image it exposes the background which is a checkerboard pattern. I usually need white.

How do I change this background behind the image so that I see white when using the eraser tool?

Using Photoshop in very basic mode. No added layers, usually.

Thanks.

Add a new white layer and place it below the other layer.
