How can I make a subject appear closer without moving his?  Kind of like the image closeup you see when you are resizing an image?

Dave, do you think he is referring to the background-to-foreground compression effect, along with a narrower angle of view, of a telephoto lens, and not to Photoshop at all? It certainly makes the background appear closer. Whew!

It's a good thought Norman. I wish I knew . Until we see an image or two to back up the description of "closer" we are all guessing.

So far we have guessed at :

    Pixelation - that wasn't it.

    Cropping - that wasn't it.

Extracting the subject and enlarging over the background - that wasn't it

Perspective crop - that wasn't it.

Telephoto lens compression - ... maybe?

Gentlemen I would send you a screen shot if I knew how to achieve what I am trying to do  which is to just take all the contents of a photo and make it appear as if the photo was taken closer.  These photos of pets we have helped are being taken by their owners and sent to us so I have no control over how the photos were taken, I am just trying to make them appear closer.

    Hi Rizcala,

In order to make a closeup, you can use the CROP tool, as other folks have suggested. Using this tool, you can define an area you like and than crop the image. Once you crop the image, it will give you the effect like it's closer because of the crop, like in the example of Norman.

    Please let us know,
    Martin

I am unable to crop anything.  How did you get the name Rizcala?

At 'this point I'm guessing, but if this is what you have in mind, just crop the photograph.

An afterthought: If the image I posted is representative of what you had in mind, then there is something more to consider.

The size of the cropped image may be much smaller than the uncropped one. In that case – if your design layout requires you to enlarge the cropped version but also maintain the same image resolution, the necessary resampling will affect the quality if that cropped version.

Let’s hope that you are starting with high resolution large image and that you’re not chopping away a huge amount of the original when cropping.

    Hi Norman,

I can't see the image you posted.  I am not croping, it was a general question how to make any photo appear closer?

Dave you know how when you resize an image you get a close up while you are doing that to see what the pixels will look like.  I am trying to obtain that type of close ups on numerous animal photos I use for our non profit
