How to use xmp file

Participant ,

I am retouching images from a client and he suggested that I use his xmp file.  Can someone help me understand how to use it in Photoshop or Lightroom (or Bridge).  I understand that xmp files can contain metadata.  Do they also include editing changes that the clients wants to make such as color temp, brightenes, white value etc?

Thanks so much,

Lisa

Is it the menu that comes up when you open a raw file in Photoshop?

Yes, that's the Camera Raw plugin.

The XMP file will contain the edits that have been done to the file so far, but can't contain suggestions to future edits.

You don't have to do anything to associate the XMP file with the image, except making sure that both files are in the same folder.

Camera Raw will read the edits automatically.

If your using their Camera RAW files and you use Adobe RAW Conversion engine to convert then to RGB image.   The XMP files they are referring to are their Camera RAW Conversion setting.  You would put the XMP files into the folders that have their RAW files that have the same file name.  ACR will use them  when converting the RAW files into RGB images.

Hi there,

OK, I don't know about Adobe RAW Conversion engine.  Is that a stand alone or part of Photoshop?  Is it the menu that comes up when you open a raw file in Photoshop?  I am familiar with that but do not know how to associate xmp files with the raw ones. Also, do these xmp files contain any editing data?

Thanks
