I'm getting error message from clone stamp tool

when I was trying to use a clone stamp tool. I'm getting error message. It says could not be used cause the area has not been defined (Alt-click to define the source point.) I don't what that mean. Same goes to healing brush. Please help. This is my first time doing the Adobe photoshop

    Hi Nancy

    When cloning you have to tell Photoshop where you want to clone from and where you want to clone to.

    So position your brush where you want to take the clone from and Alt-Click.   Now move the brush to where you to clone to and just click to paint with the cloned pixels.

    You can clone to an empty layer but the area you are cloning from must contain pixels. You can usually achieve this by setting the options in the option bar at the top of your screen to Sample : Current & below.

    Make sure a layer is selected.
