Question

I'm suddenly getting .psd thumbnails on Windows 10 Creator

I just re-imaged my computer with Windows 10 Creator and the two .psd files I had on my desktop now have thumbnails! None of my other .psd files, in other folders, have thumbnails. And if I save a new file to the desktop it has the usual PSD icon. I'm using CS5. Does anyone have any idea what's going on???

Windows does not support psd thumbnails natively. You need a third party codec installed to display them. If you had already purchased or installed one, check for updates. Ardfry, FPV, or free Sagethumbs should work.

I know Windows does not support psd thumbnails. And I don't have a third-party codec. THAT'S WHY I POSTED THIS QUESTION. I have two psd thumbnails on my desktop and have no clue why. Does anyone have an answer?

If you look at the File Info in Bridge, does it tell you what version of Photoshop created this PSD? Up until CS2, Photoshop shipped with a .dll that rendered thumbnails...psicon.dll it was, located in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Shell.

It was removed by Adobe due to "file locking" issues.

Irfanview has been known to generate PSD thumbnails.

"I have found that I can generate thumbnails for PSDs that show up in Explorer (I'm using Windows 10 64-bit) by using the free image utility Irfanview.

I just open Irfanview, go to File > Open, and navigate to a folder containing PSDs. You will see thumbnails appear for each PSD as Irfanview generates them. Once this is finished (which usually only takes a few seconds, depending on the number of PSDs), refresh the folder in Windows Explorer to get the thumbnails to show there as well."
