Images disappearing

I imported from LR 10.2 a viftual copy and made adjustments, saved the file and made a duplicate, closed the saved file, made different adjustments to the duplicate, saved it and made another duplicate, closed the 1st duplicate file, made adjustments to the 3rd duplicate and saved it. Repeated one more time.

In LR only the first duplicate showed up. I went to PS 22.3.1 and went to recent and when I cliced on the 2nd and 3rd photo I got a message that the file could not be found. They are not on my external hard drive or in LR. what is happening?

I did a spotlight search with the name and they showed up so I moved them to the desktop and imported into LR. Not sure where they were.
