Question

Is PS/AI cs5.1 compatible with mac 10.15?

My mom has been using PS cs 5.1 for a long time, so she hasn't upgraded her mac os , so I can't use another computer program(cc), so it's OS is 10.9.5. It's very old. So if I upgrade from OS 10.9 to OS 10.15, there's no problem that the previous work file won't open, right?

If you have a program that can Read/Edit the image files created in PS CS5.1, JPGs or PSDs or TIFs, that DOES RUN on MacOS Catalina 10.15.x then  yes you can open and edit those files.

Question?

What do you actuall mean when you say Upgrade to 10.15? Are you talking about upgrading your Mom's old Mac computer or buying a new one that comes with 10.15 Pre-Installed.

If your Mom's Mac still runs and runs PS CS5.1 fine then there is no reason to upgrade anything on it.

If your Mom's computer no longer runs and you mean you need to BUY a new, or Newer to you, Mac IF it has Catalina on it PS CS5.1 WILL NOT run on it and you would need either a newer, IE the Newest, version of PS or some other editing program that does run on Catalina.

"IF" all the files you are asking about are JPG files then you really don't need PS to View, Open or Edit them. There is a program included in, AFAIK, in all versions of OS X that can do that. Apple Photos.

Just for clarity, CS5 is not compatible with Catalina. So upgrading will require a subscription to CC to continue using Photoshop.

The image files made with CS5 can of course be opened in CC.

There is a further consideration. If you do decide to upgrade and take out a CC subscription, make sure the PC itself meets the minimum system requirements, which have moved on since CS5.

I'm 99% sure that CS5 will not run under Catalina. It's not offically supported per Adobe, and I just read another support post on the Apple site where someone upgraded to Catalina and their CS5.1 apps would not launch. Catalina is all 64-bit, and any software with 32-bit code will not run.

However, I'm also 99% sure that your old Photoshop and AI files can be opened in the latest versions of the software. So if  you upgrade to Catalina, you need to pay for a CC subscription and use the 2020 apps to work with the files.
