line break not working when hit enter

Community Beginner ,
Nov 10, 2019 Nov 10, 2019

I have tried various things and can't get the line break to work.  Like resetting preferences, changing settings in character, etc.   I am not super tech savy so please don't give me a complicated answer involving code if possible.  Thanks

Check to see that you are using the Enter on the alphabetic part of the keyboard and not the Numeric Enter.

What do you mean exactly by "it doesn't work?"

Can you show us a screenshot with the Type layer and Type tool selected?

Ok I will try to explain.  When I try to add text whether to paragraph or just point...when I hit enter to go to the next line it won't do anything.  Also, canvas size is 1200x1200px and text size is 1296pt. If that matters?  Any help would be appreciated.  Making me crazy!

1296pt font is gigantic.  What resolution is your canvas?

Hi, I'm pretty sure that your canvas is not 1200x1200 PIXELS... It might be inches, at a huge resolution: the open document size is 20 GIGS, check in the status bar of the posted images (just on top of Type here to search)

This reply solved so many of my issues that I'm both happy and angry right now.

@PhillipHall9000

I'm glad it helped (I think), and hope you are more happy than angry?

I only have the one Return key. There's no separate section with numeric keys.

The Return key is only on macOS, and the earlier answer was for Windows.

Windows has two Enter keys, one of which is on the numeric keypad.

On macOS there is one Return key on the alphabetic keypad and one Enter key on the Numeric keypad. Apple offers keyboards with or without the numeric keypad.

In some applications, the keypad Enter is programmed differently from the alphabetic Enter/Return.

The Return key (macOS only) is programmed to start a new paragraph.

I came across this with the same issue today. I found out that you can adjust the line break spacing here. Mine was weirdly set to 0 which meant everytime I tried a line break, the line would reset and write over the previous words.Screen Shot 2022-10-03 at 7.10.30 PM.jpg

@veronicav7448623

I'm not sure that your issue is the same. Do you mean your leading was set to zero? Gutenberg used typesize plus two, meaning 12 point type would have 14 points of leading (12/14).

You have 36/36, which is okay because you also have All Caps turned on so you don't need as much leading.

Your tracking is 400, which seems extreme. If your letters are too far apart, you might reduce that.

Rita (the OP) posted a screen shot that showed "Auto" for her leading, not zero. By default, Auto is defined as 120% of the typesize. Her issue was that she when she pressed Enter, nothing else happened.

I'm glad you were able to solve your issue, and it will be helpful to others who search the forums.
