Making Photoshop zoom smoother

Community Beginner ,
Jun 02, 2018 Jun 02, 2018

Using alt + scroll wheel, the zoom feels really choppy. I'd like it to feel completely smooth -- is there a way to enable that?

I have scrubby zoom disabled and animated zoom enabled (I find that animated zoom is a little less choppy, but not as much as I'd like).

Thanks for any help!

How do you have thing configured.  In my Photoshop preference  tools I have checked Zoom with Scroll wheel.  However if I use Alt+Scroll Wheel the image will scroll up and down if posible not zoom.

Zooming and Scrolling with the mouse wheel is quite smooth.

My workstation Processors are quite slow 2GHz so my high speed ram is clocked slower then my ram can be clocked.  My machine is 5 years old. A Dell T5700 workstation dual Six Core xeons, 40GB ECC RAM,  256GB SDD and a Nvidia Quadro 4000. 4TB external USB 3 disk,  Logitech G502  Mouse and Wacom Intuos pro small.

My settings are pretty similar:

I prefer to use the scroll wheel to move up and down, and alt + scroll wheel to zoom, so that's how I've set things up. But that shouldn't affect the scroll speed, of course.

My specs also shouldn't be an issue -- i3-8100, 16GB DDR4 clocked at the default 2400 MHz, and a 256GB SSD.

I don't know, maybe I'm being too picky -- I'd just like it to zoom totally seamlessly, just like the way you pan left and right with the mouse, for example.

For anyone else having this issue, I solved mine by deleting my settings file in photoshop.  You lose your custom settings if you have any, but it was worth it in my case.

Holding CMD+OPTION+SHIFT (CTRL+ALT+SHIFT on PC) immediately on starting photoshop brings up a dialog to delete your settings file.

After doing this the zoom function began acting as intended again.   Hope this helps.
