The options bar for the Move Tool has an icon with a stack of layers and an arrow (see image below) instead of the Auto Select option. How do I get rid of the stack and show auto select?

You have the narrow options bar enabled which shows icons instead of the full option description

Before:

Go to preferences - Workspace and uncheck "Enable Narrow Options Bar" then restart Photoshop

I do not have the narrow options bar checked, it has always been unchecked. I'm using 2022 version and the selection arrow has just completely disappeared. This is tremendously frustrating. When I copy something from another Photoshop file (photo) and use Edit Copy and then Paste, it just smacks itself in the middle of the new doc and I cannot move it at all to where I want it. I'm on deadline and this is driving me crazy.

I know it's a holiday and no one will be able to reply, but thanks for the "vent."
