Newbie - stuck with PNG file size

Hi everyone

Can you help me please? I have been learning PS for the last few months with a view to producing digital art. To start with I had no problem with file sizes, but now I am incorporating more photographic elements I am having the following issue:

- Create a PS document, usually with a transparent background = 139mb

- Export as PNG = PS says 35.1mb (36.8mb on saving)

- Upload to Redbubble - no problem! (300mb limit)

- Upload to PlaceIt (to create marketing images) - problem as they have a 12mb file upload limit

Things I have tried:

- Flattening layers - kills the transparency

- Merging layers - very little impact

- Tried PNG file reduction tools - file size too big to reduce!

- Tried JPEG - kills the transparency / still too large @ 12.2mb

- Removing any unnecessary layers/content

As I'm still learning I don't know all the detailed saving settings (welcome any course/video recommendations on that! I've been using PluralSight PS courses which have been great).

Anyway, thanks very much in advance.

JJ

For photographic, as opposed to graphical, elements jpeg will give you better compression.

Edit - ignore that - I've just noticed that you need transparency.

What are dimensions of your file? I can not see your file but have you tried with PNG/8 which also offers transparency but smaller file size?

Hi Bojan, thanks for the quick reply - my file is 4500 x 5400 px (300ppi).

Just tried 'smaller file (8 bit)' - is that what you mean? I get 'an unknown error has occurred' message.

Here is a screenshot of the settings I am using.

Yes, I was pointing to 8 bit on your screenshot. PNG-8 is not designed for continuous tone images, by the way, and you have error message because dimension limitation in save as dialogue. Perhaps you can try with smaller dimensions because whoever set upload limit should be aware of some other limitations and file size in PNG-24 format. I am assuming that you want to upload continuous tone image with effect, if you need only black and white image which wll be used for mask then use PNG-8 and try some alternative option to save or to convert/reduce file size. Look for some plugin or tool for task.
