Not enough RAM while there clearly is?

Hello everyone,

One .psd file, 100MB, 15 layers, no text. Trying to drag a 2500px transparent .png into the image, and "Could not place the document [...].png because there is not enough memory (RAM)." Can't even open the aforementioned png separately.

.jpg files are fine, and most smaller .pngs too.

Photoshop has been recently updated (28.05.2013).

Got similar errors yesterday when I couldn't use the Save for Web option (not enough memory) or brushes larger than 1000px. Restarted Photoshop, restarted the PC, nothing.

There have been almost no lags and all filters, brushes, etc... work super fast. Just the RAM issue.

Efficiency is 100%.

Preferences > General

Available RAM 3255 MB, and Photoshop is allowed to use 100%.

Scratch Disk is C:\ with 12,79GB of free space.

Recovery information won't be saved, clipboard won't be exported. I regularly purge the history.

Task manager shows that 6,51GB of memory is currently in use, CPU usage lingers between 1%-3%.

Other programs open right now: Skype, Chrome (6 tabs), FastStone ImageViewer.

Intel Core i-7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz

16,0GB RAM

64-bit Windows 7

Photoshop version is CS6.

Yes, you should favor the 64bits version, despite the fact that I understand why you run into more RAM problems with that version...

You DO need to make way more room on the C: drive, or to use another one that has more free space.

The MAIN memory of Photoshop is its Scratch file, the CACHE is in the RAM.

When the RAM fills up (and the 64bits version of Photoshop can use way more than the 3GBs that the 32bits version can), windows creates a bigger pagefile on the HD, and competes for room, hence the not enough memory message.

The 100MB is it on Photoshop's infobar at the bottom of the image window, or on disk? Remember that even PSD files are compressed on Disk, and occupy way more room when opened.

Your display drivers are one year old, is there a newer version available?

I managed to solve this issue by closing all the Google Chrome windows as well as close the chrome app fully from the main taskbar at the bottom of the computer.

It is really annoying, I have freed more than 15gb worth of space on my disk but no changes and only when i closed all the chrome windows, it successfully exported the file to .psd

Hello!

Could you post the contents of Help>System info, so that we can see what updates are installed, if you are running the 64 or 32 bits version of Photoshop, the display driver version, etc.

I would not give 100% of the RAM allocation to Photoshop, it might starve i/o drivers, for instance.

The 64-bit has been installed too, and I get the same RAM issues, just more often.

One thing i notice is you only have roughly 12 gb of space left on your c drive.

That's getting pretty low for photoshop plus whatever other programs you have running.
