open bmp file in photoshop cc 2015.5

Hi--

I am trying to open a .bmp file using Photoshop CC 2015.5, but receive the following error message: "Could not complete your request because the file-format module cannot parse the file."

I think the file itself is OK because it can be opened in Paint, and other .bmp files that originated from the same piece of equipment could be opened on a different computer/earlier version of Photoshop.

When I downloaded Photoshop, I did not do any customization (don't really know how).  Looking at other forums, the suggestion was made to look for a "BMP.8BI" file, but there is not even a "File Formats" folder in the AP CS2 "Plug-Ins" folder.

Any suggestions?
