Photoshop 21.2 Save As jpg not overwriting (and also sometimes won't save) on macOS 10.15.5

I've got a lot of JPGs to crop and save (straight forward as that), but each time I hit save, it asks me to do a Save As and the 'As A Copy' box is greyed. Clicking the file name to overwrite, it asks me Cancel/Replace, I hit replace and it just saves a copy instead. I want to overwrite the old JPG, and I don't want a copy or another file that says copy! I'm sure it didn't do this before!

And side note - what's the program error when you simply hit cmd-s? And also a bunch of temp files appearing too?

Mac OS 10.15.5

Photoshop: 21.2

Also, make sure your Crop tool isn’t set to retain pixels outside of the crop area, that would convert a flat Background layer into a Layer 0. Even single layered files can’t be saved as JPEGs, and would force a Save As. If the document is layered make sure you Flatten Image before the save.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it's not checked to retain the data, and once it's been cropped (or edited), it's still the one Background layer with a padlock, still RGB, still 8 bit and all of that. Literally open, quick edit/crop, close. Just won't save over the top.

Even with some other files, where it is a PSD and I'm saving a JPG version and wanting to overwrite a prev version, again, asks if I'm sure I want to replace, then just does a copy instead, and doesn't replace at all.

Hi there,

We're sorry about the trouble with Photoshop while trying to overwrite Jpeg files. The behavior has been reported as a bug and the product team is working on a fix. Please add your vote here: https://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/photoshop-saving-copy-not-saving-over-jpg-file?topic-reply-list[settings][page]=5#topic-reply-list

For the program error you are getting, please go to the Preferences for Photoshop, then Performance and uncheck the option for Legacy Compositing. Once done, quit and relaunch Photoshop to check if it helps.

Let us know how it goes!

Regards,

Nikunj
