photoshop problem.pngOk I was just using photoshop, not doing anything differently and I went to use the eraser and set the opacity down a bit and put it over a picture but noticed doesnt erase and make the edges of the picture fade but makes a big line which has just lowered opacity instead of feathering it. It's very strange, have reinstalled Photoshop twice but nothing   Even tried different types of photoshop but to no avail.

Looks to me to be working, from what you've described.  The Eraser tool, run on a layer, will change the opacity of the layer in the places you brush.

Are you looking for a feathered edge at the edges of your brush stroke?  IF so, then you will need to change the Hardness of the brush being used to erase with.

If I'm off base, perhaps you should describe what you're trying to accomplish in more detail.

The hardness has feathered it and has helped yes, but the problem is if I keep the mouse held down and keep going over the area, usually the eraser will erase more and more over the same area but just keeps a constant opacity throughout the whole thing

Ah, you looking for Airbrush mode, then.  That's the little icon to the right of the Flow setting at the top of the Photoshop main window.

Make sure your Opacity is set to whatever minimum level of opacity you want for the deepest erasure.  You can turn the Flow down to make it erase less aggressively.

You should read up on how the Opacity, Flow, and Airbrush mode interact.

You also might want to bring up the Brush panel (Window - Brush menu) and examine the settings in there (e.g., Spacing).

Brushing in Photoshop has a huge amount of control.

The airbrush icon isn't working. Here is a picture with the top half gone over constantly with non airbrush eraser and bottom half with it, no difference  Photoshop problem 2.png

You've set the spacing to 1%.  This affects the amount of actual flow the brush experiences (it's much more than at 25% spacing).

I've never liked this interaction myself, but it is what it is.

You can compensate by turning the flow way down - e.g., to well under 10%.

Changed the spacing seemed to have barely any impact and the flow at about 10 percent almost works, but barely comes out due to the low flow level and with both still has the same problems.  Are there no way i can get the eraser to default settings?

Rather than giving up, you should try and figure out all the interactions of these controls, and how to get the brush processing in Photoshop to work for you.  You'll need it again.

But if you want to reset the Eraser tool, do this:

  • Select the Eraser tool.
  • Choose Window - Tool Presets.
  • Click the flyout menu icon in the upper-right corner of the panel.
  • Choose Reset Tool.

Not even resetting the tool fixed it, photoshops sorta ruined for me without it back to like it was . Thanks for the advice anyway. Just wish I could find a bloody fix

Select another brush tip that is even softer for the result that you are after.

Y'know, it's been hard to discern what you really want.  We're not mind readers.

You want to be able to brush over and over the same spot and have the Eraser tool erase more and more of the layer, right?  Until, if you go long enough, you've erased everything, right?

After resetting the tool, setting Opacity to 100% and Flow to 7% or simiilar should do that.

Opacity determines the lowest level the Eraser tool can accomplish, and Flow determines how quickly you get there.

Given that information, PLEASE try to describe in detail what you expect and what  it's not doing for you.

I am having a hard time following your description of the problem. However, if I guess what you are trying to achieve, I would suggest  that in addition to an appropriately soft brush you use brush settings closer to  Opacity = 100 % and Flow = 5%.
