When I first open Photoshop, the histogram displays a circle with a diagonal slash through it.
When I load a photo, with the histogram set on colors:
a) has a strange dark green/dark grey color, among the other colors;
b) will not allow me to edit the photo with the histogram.
Any ideas?

Hello, You might mistake Camera Raw's histogram with Photoshop's: there is no image editing abilities built in Photoshop's version.
The colors are not the same as in Camera Raw.

Could you please post screenshots with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Histogram, Options Bar, …) visible?
