Question

PhotoShop making spontaneous unwanted design changes when saving

A friend of mine and I are experiencing something strange. She designed a book cover for me in PhotoShop. We went through several revisions and ended up with a final solution. I believe she saves some of the older revisions as layers and makes them invisible, in case we need them.

I love the final version. But we're seeing an odd thing. When I ask for a small change, such as centering text, she makes the change -- but when she saves the file, PhotoShop will do something quirky like move other text around (that she didn't touch), turn off layers, or bring an unwanted layer forward. The end result is a cover that contains unwanted/missing elements. When I point them out, she's baffled because she never touched/changed any of those elements.

Could this be a software issue? Or maybe some weird preference setting? This is the third cover she's done for me in a series, so she starts with the same base template project file, and we're having this problem with all three covers. She's never had this happen before. It's really interfering with our process, not to mention stressing us both out! Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Are you on identical PS versions? Same fonts installed?

I should be said, though, that Photoshop is the worst possible tool for this. Anything involving text should be made in InDesign, or perhaps Illustrator. But certainly not Photoshop.

Photoshop is a raster editor and maintaining text as vector requires a lot of care and precautions. Ultimately it may not even be possible to output text from Photoshop without rasterizing it.

Sorry, I should have said that I'm not using PhotoShop for these covers. I've used PS in the past and still subscribe to it, which is why I'm posting here. So us 'using identical versions' isn't an issue. She's the only person working in PhotoShop, and I receive the covers as JPGs. If I need a change, I e-mail her and she does it for me (we're several U.S. states apart).

She's a graphic designer and has designed dozens of book covers in PhotoShop. And the problem we're having isn't limited to text. She's making a small change, but the saved JPG will have a missing light effect, or even different clothing on the character. It's really bizarre and I'm trying to help her figure out what's happning. 🙂
