Question

Project becomes unresponsive. Menu bar still works.

I've been using photoshop for a couple of weeks now for school. My projects have been regularly freezing and becoming unresponsive to the tools, drag, zoom etc. The windows can still be resized and I can still interact with the top menu and click on tools on the left. I can drag around the windows but cannot interact with the project itself at all once the problem occurs. Dragging the project window to be smaller then bigger will cut off those parts of the project and replace it with a bunch of duplicates of the boarders of the window. So far the only thing I know to do is restart photoshop and get some more work in before the project becomes unresponsive again. The project can still be saved in this state and resumed once the program is restarted. I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue. I dont know enough terminology yet to be more specific, so I apologize for that. My photoshop is up to date. I'm running a PC with windows 10 which is also up to date. I have a ryzen 3600 6 core processor, Nvidia gtx 1660 (with the up-to-date creative studio driver), 500gb SSD, 32 gb of ram (just upgraded from 16gb to see if that would resolve the issue) and a 650 watt power supply. If anyone could give me some direction that would be very appreciated. Also, please let me know if there's any other information I can provide that would be helpful in diagnosing this issue. I seem to be the only person in my class with this problem.

Thanks for reading.

Did you solve this problem? I have the same. My PC on AMD 5600G, integrated video, SSD500 M.2, 32GB RAM, Win 10, Photoshop 2022 and 2023 both the same problem.

What have you done for all-purpose trouble-shooting so far?
Restoring Preferences after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved might be a good starting point:

The problem started immediately after installing Photoshop, on a freshly installed operating system.
Therefore, resetting the settings does not play a role.
The problem is observed in two freshly installed versions of Photoshop 2022 and 2023.

I tried to twist the settings step by step:
-Maximum memory available to Photoshop
- disabled multi-threaded compositing
- set to work with large images
-disabled OpenCL
-disabled graphics accelerator (in this mode it is difficult to work and achieve a problem, in general, this is not considered a method of treatment, but there is reason to believe that this is some kind of conflict with the video system or memory)
-tried booting with disabling third-party apps (SHIFT while booting)

It should be noted that work is always carried out with large projects in terms of the number of layers and the size of about 4500x4500. The project weighs about 1GB.

There is also an interesting effect:
after the project hangs, Photoshop continues to function and you can, for example, create a new project and draw fully in it, while the hung project continues to not respond to actions.

There is no logic in why the project hangs. It can be any tool, directly during operation.

In a hung project, you can turn off the inclusion of layers, while in the navigator the sketch is updated, but the surface of the project window is frozen in the last working state of the project. In this case, when the window is resized, this freeze frame changes disproportionately following the change in the frame of the project window.

Never write something like »up to date« instead of simply giving the exact version number, please.

Does turning off »Use Graphics Processor« in the Performance Preferences (Photoshop > Preferences > Performance > Graphic Processor Settings) and restarting Photoshop have any bearing on the issue?

Could you please post a screenshot with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Channels, Options Bar, …) visible?
