Question

"Use Graphics Processor" causing performance issues

Hey,

I'm a concept artist, and I recently have had issues with my new iMac Pro and my Macbook Pro using the Graphics Processor option in the Performance tab. The problem relates only to when I'm using custom shapes.

If I turn off the "Use Graphics Processor", the custom shapes work fine, but then my brushes lag more and I can't change image size and free transform and so on smoothly. If I turn it on, the rest of the software works nicely but the custom shapes are incredibly slow and sometimes even freezes my entire Photoshop.

This works flawlessly on my old 2012 PC, but I feel that having bought an iMac Pro for $10.000 in 2018 should be able to handle those things...

I called Adobe Support and he only said shut off the Use Graphics Processor, but then everything else is slower.

What can I do to solve this? It seems like a bug or compatibility issue.

Thanks.

W.

Still having this issue. >.<

How can custom shapes be a thing that breaks my iMac Pro, the most powerful Apple computer ever?

What you can try, just as a shot in the dark, is to reset Photoshop's preferences. Sometimes that fixes the weirdest problems.

Thanks D Fosse - I've reset the preferences a few times and so did the Adobe support. It's still the same. I guess I'll just have to live with this. It just sucks to buy a computer for $10k that doesn't work like my old '12 PC. :/

Sounds like something's up with the video adapter's driver (something that's not so easily fixable where Apple's concerned). Contact Apple yet? (Yeah, I know; they'll probably say "contact Adobe" as an easy out but honestly, it's happened before where Apple's OS X (before macOS was a thing) was causing display issues in Photoshop via its video adapter drivers. It was eventually fixed by Apple.)

Thanks for your answer! I have only contacted Adobe as of yet, and all they did was shut off the Graphics Processor, but that's not ideal because everything else in Photoshop runs slower then.

I will try contacting Apple. Anything special I should try asking? Or try doing?

Thanks, this is driving me nuts.

In all likelihood you'll have to wait for a MacOS update, and hope that fixes it.

On Windows you can get an updated driver directly from NVidia/AMD, but with Apple video driver updates are embedded in the OS updates. You can't do it separately. In the meantime, disable it.
