Red filter in Black & white

New Here ,

Hi all, apologies if I am in the wrong place, first try at a question. I have converted some photos to black and white and am pleased with the outcome. Years ago when I used to shoot with good old black & white film  ( remember film? that ages me) use of a red or orange filter could produce dramatic effects turning a blue sky dark or even black, whilst the rest of the photo would be relatively unaltered ( unless it contained a lot of blue anyway).  How would I create this effect in PS ? Simple application of a red filter from the filters box just gives a red tint, it is not like shooting through a red filter with monochrome film.

I am probably just missing the obvious, but any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

NEIL

Add a Channel Mixer adjustment layer, and check the Monochrome box. Then, adjust the sliders as desired.

Just to make sure: Have you maintained the full color content and achieved the b&w with Adjustment Layers or have you actually converted to grayscale?

On the Image menu adjustments sub-menu choices of Vibrance, Hue/ saturation, colour balance   , black and white , photo filter etc I have picked the " black and white".

There do seem to be other ways of achieving black and white but this seemed the most obvious. Not that this makes it correct however !

You may want to start using Adjustment Layers to avoid working destructively.

Many Adjustments actually can be applied as Smart Filters, but as you have not provided a meaningful screenshot it seems impossible to tell if the image is a Smart Object at current.

Hi Neil

You can adjust individual colors during the conversion to Black and White if you convert using a Black and White adjustment layer.

If you go to the top of the adjustments there are presets including "Red Filter" to act as a starting point
