Saving files back to Lightroom classic from Photoshop

Community Beginner ,
May 26, 2021 May 26, 2021

I have done my best to understand PS and LR interface, but it gets complicated.  I understand that editing a photo in PS that came from LR through the Edit In command and saving it with Save Command, brings it back into the LR catalog, without creating a new file in my disk.  Also, a stack is created with the different versions of my photo. Is that accurate?

However, looks like when the editing in Photoshop gets a little more heavy, such as adding a layer or more, the Save command does not save the photo back to LR Catalog, and it must be added manually.   Am I wrong?

Please, help me understand.

Hi,

Would you mind telling us which format are the original images in? If you are taking a Raw file from Lightroom Classic to Photoshop, when you save the file back to Lightroom Classic, it should bring a Tiff or PSD file back & stack it with the original (depending on the option selected under the external editor preferences). This Tiff/PSD file also gets saved on your local storage, in the same folder as the original file.

The new file which is created would be heavier than the original since it also contains the edits you have performed. More the number of layers in the output file, the heavier it would be.

For more on this workflow, you can check: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/help/editing-photoshop-or-photoshop-elements.html

Let us know if you have any other questions!

Regards,

Nikunj

What I am not still sure of is that sometimes, the Save command, instead
of just saving, asks me to choose a place in my hard drive. Shouldn't it
just go to the original folder?
If I change and choose a different folder, will the photo to be saved and
its location get recorded in the LR Catalog,?

Thank you

If you have never saved a file, Photoshop will ask where to save and the filename. That's because there is no file on your drive.

Once a file exists on a drive, then Save just updates that file.

I made a test. If I edit a JPG from LR in PS, and add one layer to it. and
then execute command, :

It does ask where to store it, and,
Once saved, it doesn't appear in the Ligthroom catalog, I have to import it
manually.

Looks cumbersome and inconvenient to me.

Thank you

You cannot save a JPEG with layers so yes its a new file in a format like PSD or TIFF that supports layers.

I understand that, but why do I have to catalog it manually?

Lightroom doesn't always add files that you manually save. you have to import them.

Thank you

I am very fond of Adobe Products and believe that some key ideas such as
layers, layer masks, smart objects, blend modes, etc. are brilliant, among
many others.

However, I am very critical of their product portfolio architecture. I
like to think that they accumulated restrictions along the development
years, that do not allow them a more streamlined structure.
If I were to design that from scratch, would make it different.

For example:
- Lightroom Classic existing alongside Lightroom CC. Very confusing.
- LR interface with Photoshop: obscure, not enough transparent, not
straightforward. Why not a catalog handling product on one side and an
editing product on the other?
- Camera Raw also overlapping with Lightroom.

Difficult to understand the need to do this.

Be safe
