Question

Select and Mask always causes disk error message

Whenever I try to use 'Select and mask' I get a message that says 'Could not use the tool because of a disk error.'.

Everything else works - other programs and other parts of Photoshop.

I am using the latest version from Creative Cloud on an HP Pavilion i7 with lots of disk and RAM.

Can anybody help?

Aha resetting preferences worked, should have done that on the onset.

    Thanks Guys

As suggested above, I would definitely try to reset preferences. Also, perhaps simply uninstalling and reinstalling Photoshop may help. Happens often at my job - program ends up acting weird and a simple removal and reinstall actually helps. Not every time, but it might be worth a try for you!

Had the exact same problem, disk error only on 'select and mask'.
Luckily for me, there was an update available so I updated and the problem went away.

ok ignore that the problem came back grrrr

Try Reset Preferences on Quit.  That takes care of a lot of unusual behavior.  You'll find it under Edit > Preferences.

    Good day!

What have you done for trouble-shooting so far?

Restoring Preferences after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved might be a good starting point:

I don't actually think you've read the question at all, @c.pfaffenbichler.

I get this same error also while using the Select and Mask tool. It's odd that Google has only come up with two results for the exact "could not use the tool because of a disk error" message and that this has happened in the last two weeks.

I have an i7-based PC with 32GB and plenty of space on my scratch disks, so this should not work.

    Can anyone look into this?

So what have you actually done for trouble-shooting?
