Strokes on showing on shapes that are side-by-side

I pasted something into Photoshop from Illustrator as a shape. What I did was paste in the grouped objects as shapes, then removed the fill and added a stroke. The goal here is to have a second copy of those shapes and use them as the fill or centre.

I paste that in. As you can see, the shapes are all side-by-side.

I then get rid of the fill and add a random colour stroke. Just so I can see it. And that stroke will eventually be a gradient. If I can get it to work, that is. When I move the individual pieces around, it works. But it's not much of a solution. I need them together tightly.

This is what I end up with once I remove the fill and add the random colour stroke.
