Question

Two Different Default Preset Folders on Win 10

Hello,

I am using Win 10. I recently purchased the monthly subscription to Photoshop and have been downloading various pattern, shapes, styles, etc.. I was putting the files (.pat, .csh, .asl, etc) here:

C\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC 2019\Presets\specific folder

These folders contain all the sets that came with Photoshop as well.

but just realized that if I save a set from within Photoshop the file ends up located here:

C\Users\Name\App Data\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC 2019\Presets\specific folder

Other than what I have saved from within the program, these folders are empty.

Can I combine things so that everything is in the same place and I only have to manage one Preset folder, and if so, which of the above locations should everything be in?

Correct  C\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC 2019\Presets\specific folder  folders like that are in every Photoshop version install tree and are shared with all users on a machine that use Photoshop.

Users  have the own folders in addition folders. Where they can store their Photoshop add ons you can  can be save and stored them in these ie C\Users\Name\App Data\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC 2019\Presets\specific folder Adobe seems to create these user application data folders for each user that uses Photoshop.  Personally I do not store my add ons in them.  I store things I add on to Photoshop in my own Photoshop add on tree. So I know where things are and I can load them into versions of Photoshop I wish to use them in. Or link Photoshop version to them.  I do not want to depend on Adobe or have them wipeouts thing I create.

It sounds like then that I can go ahead and move the odd files created from within PS over to the folders under Program Files (instead  of leaving them by themselves in the Users tree) without any negative consequence. Thankyou.

Those  folders are part of Adobe Photoshop install tree. If the folder is like Plug-ins your third party plug-ins will be installed  there.  You would also install scripts you add to Photoshop into Presets scripts.  Other Adobe Folders you should not mess with.   Keep your add ons in folders you create and maintain,  Do not manage your your Photoshop add ons in Adobe created folders.  The is no negative effect  other than it does make maintaining add ons more complex and harder to do.  Adobe will not migrate your add ons and you will forget which file are your add ons and which file are part of adobe Photoshop..


Thanks for the advice. Keeping my add-ons in my own folder outside of the Adobe directory sounds like the way to go. So I'd make one folder called say "MyAddOns" or whatever and make separate folders inside that for Styles, Shapes, Brushes, etc... (just like in the default Preset folder) but how then do I tell Photoshop where to find them?
