Question

Using Camera Raw on a layer and seeing all previous layers of the photograph

In CC 2019

  • I'm opening a DNG photograph and using Camera RAW for the initial settings.
  • I convert it to a smart object so I can edit the results later.
  • There are some areas in the image that have haze in them that I want to reduce, so I'm using Select and Mask and creating a new Layer with layer mask from the result.
  • I convert the layer to a smart object so I can edit the filter later.
  • Then I want to be able to use Camera RAW Filter on the Layer and see the rest of the image so I can adjust it relative to the entire photograph.
  • When I open the new layer with the Camera RAW filter, I only see the part of the image I selected in the Select and Mask.

How do i see the entire image/photograph and be able to apply Camera RAW changes to only the layer I'm working on.

I'm am new to using Photoshop in the way and would appreciate any help or direction.

Step one: open as smart object from ACR - don't convert after it's opened!

In the first case the SO contains the original raw file, in the second case it contains a rendered RGB file with lots of data already discarded.

The ACR filter is not the same thing as the full ACR processor.

The filter works on individual layers. It works just like any other filter in the filter menu.

Please post screenshot with Layers panel expanded and visible. If you have situation like below on screenshot then you should see entire image when opening it in Camera Raw Filter for adjustments. You can see in Camera Raw only content of the Smart Object not entire Layers panel.

I have always wondered if this was possible.
