Question

What's the quickest way to tone dow/remove outline around image after using magic wand?

I'm fairly new to Photoshop, so apologies if this is a dumb question.

I've used the magic wand to remove an unwanted background from a photo. It worked well, however I'm left with a very vivid outline around the dog now that I'd like to get rid of or tone down in the easiest possible way. Of course I can brush it away manually, but I need to do this with a lot of images I would prefer a faster way to do it. It doesn't matter if the result isn't 100% perfect since I'm going apply a lot of other effects to the photo afterwards which drown out smaller imperfections. However, the way it currently looks in the image below is not good enough. Any tips would be very welcome

The best way would be to do this when creating the mask/selection.

Select the dog and modify the selection size by a pixel or two.

If you have this as a mask - you can still modify it by double clicking the mask and opening it in Select and Mask and modifying the mask there. Refine edge will do a much better job on the fur edges than the straight mask.

However you can quickly remove edge contamination by adding two layers. If the dog is on a separate layer to the black background clip these layers to the dog layer. This will prevent the two layers from affecting the background (which in this case being black does not matter. Set the first layer to colour blending mode and the second to Darken. Then just pick up colour from near the edge of the fur and and quickly brush round.

Thank you Dave - I'll play around with these methods
