Question

Why are my file sizes larger after cropping?

I have been using photo shop for about 6 months now and I have never had this problem.  I wanted to try overlays for the first time so I think I might have clicked on some kind of setting that automatically creates layers as I work? I am not sure what is going on... I realized how the big files were after using an overlay so I figured I better not use them until I know what i'm doing lol So I went back to my regular editing steps and everything has changed! My original file sizes are around 6 or 7mb and after using LR and PS I have cropped them to 4x6 and usually they are around 1mb or less... but now they are BIGGER!?! Some of them are coming out around 12mb!! What did I do?? Also I have noticed that when I crop or straighten an image with the copping tool it still shows up as the full size image when using any other editing tools such as Camera Raw filter... this is new so I now I must have done something! I hope someone knows what I'm talking about!

How do you open images in Ps? Perhaps as an embedded smart object and then you save the file as PSD? One way to increase file size is to convert layer to Smart Object layer. You cannot crop content on the Smart Object layer, original data will be preserved and saved along with cropped version which you see on your screen. Camera Raw filter applied to Smart Object will also add to file size.

OMGoodness I have no idea how to do most of what you said... I pretty much have taught myself to be able to do what I can do so far lol but I load the files to my computer and then "open with" APS and the first thing I do is Crop it to 4x6 700 dpi. This is what I have always done and it automatically resizes the image to a smaller size.  I use social media to share and send files and have never had issues with sending them in Email and now just to send 12 images it says it's over 33mb and it has never been like that! So if I did change the object to smart object layer how do I change it back? Because from what you are saying I think that might be what I did to use the overlays? Especially because you said the original data will be preserved when cropping and using camera Raw filer! Thank you so much for your help!!!
