Why i cannot save a smart object?

Community Beginner ,
Apr 24, 2020 Apr 24, 2020

I double click a smart object, a new tab opens with the smart object in it, I make the changes i like, then i click save, and instead of saving the changes and get me to the first tab, the jpeg save dialog apears.

What's going on?

Pretty sure this is a bug.

»Pretty sure this is a bug.«

Pretty sure you are mistaken.

What is the SO’s file format and what were the changes?

When one places a jpg as a SO for example the SO is a jpg – unsurprisingly.

When one edits the SO and adds features that the jpg-format cannot sustain (like Layers for example) one cannot save the SO naturally, but has to save in a file-format that support those features.

Which results in a new file which one can then use to replace the original SO.

How were you saving the edited SO?  I've never used anything by Ctrl S to apply the edits, but if I want to save the SO as a new file then going via the File menu does that.  That's normal behaviour.

I think that c_pfaffenbichler has good guess what is the problem. One of the solutions is to flatten from Layer > Flatten Image before saving. Is that solution to your problem?
