Assets manager: show partially used clips

Hi I just purchased PRE 15 after having been using iMovie. Reason was for better color grading and tone corrections.

My issue with PRE is that if I have a long clip I want to use in different parts of the edit the Assets Manager does not to appear to indicate what parts of the clip have already been used.

This is very handy in iMovie, where the clips' length is visually displayed in the organizer, and there is a line marker for the sections that have been used, rejected or starred.

In PRE 15 all the clips in the asset manager are simply displayed with an icon and there is an indicator if the clip has been used on the timeline or not, but no indication if only a small portion had been used.

While PRE seems more powerful than iMovie, this issue is a real downside, especially considering that there is no skimming with mouse over for the clips like iMovie, but i need to double click on each one to see it.

Maybe I am missing something, but I wonder if I should have bought Final Cut X instead.

Or i could do basic edits with iMovie and then color corrections with PRE 15, but the double encoding may decrease the image quality.

If you output a high-def 1920x1080 MP4 from iMovie, you would likely not lose noticeable quality in porting the finished file to Premiere Elements.

Yes, the Clip Monitor will show the audio waveform. Just double-click on the clip in Project Assets to open it.

There are a number of ways to take sub-clips from a long clip -- but no way I know of to indicate on a long clip which segments of it have been used.

it would be a useful feature to show what sub clips have been used, especially if there are many clips and editing is not chronological.

How do people avoid using the same segment twice?

I guess i can put a long clip at the end of the timeline while I splice and use its parts. I wonder if there are other workarounds.

The assets manager looks a bit archaic.

If I use iMovie to put together clips in an edit and import the final video in APE to edit sound and color grading, would I lose a lot of quality?

(As I've said, it's difficult to compare iMovie to Premiere Elements -- apples to apples -- because they use such different vocabularies.)

is there a way to show the audio waveform in the clip monitor?

it helps to quickly select a portion when a subject is speaking.

If i have a long clip with repetitive footage, can Premiere indicate if a a portion of that single clip has been already selected and inserted on the timeline?

Go to the panel options in the upper right of the Project Assets panel and set View to List View. In List View you can see the running times for each clip. A green dot will indicate of the clip has been used on your timeline.

Other features you describe may be unique to iMovie or may be called something else.

I guess which program you should edit with depends on which features are your priority.

The issue if you have a long clip it does not indicate which parts have been used.

What I like about iMovie it does that.

Can I select a portion of a clip from the asset manager and drag only that part on the timeline?
