MP4 not importing - generic error

New Here ,
Aug 29, 2025 Aug 29, 2025

I have had 4 sports cameras (4k).  The first two allowed me to add MP4 videos to Adobe Premiere Elements Video Editor (Elements 2023) no problem.  The latter two would not allow me to add their files, also said to be MP4, showing message “the importer reported a generic error”.  I have downloaded latest codecs but this doesn’t work.  Any ideas?  The updates option is greyed out so not sure if there is a fix

Never install codec unless its not on your system. It can mess up your good codec. Elements has all you need.

MP4 is just a container.

The two cameras which won't import most likely have a different flavor of H.264? codec stored inside the mp4.

Convert the files with Handbrake before bringing them into Elements.

Ann is right. MP4s can produce a variety of video specs. Is your sport camera shooting at 4K 60p, for instance? Premiere Elements can not work with those specs.
