pe is locked up

editing and applying transitions, and all of a sudden I have a black cursor over a white cursor with a no glyph below it.

I can do nothing.

escape does not help. suggestions?
there is about an hour of work, and apparently save is no longer a choice

Reboot your computer and then restart PrE.  If the project doesn't open, open the most recently saved auto backup.

what does that symbol indicate?

it seemed that each time, I was dragging a transition to the timeline.

Can you post a screen shot?  What transition were you trying to use?
