Problems with Premiere Elements 8 after updating to Nvidia driver 195.81 or later?

Hello PRE8 users,

If you have an Nvidia-based graphics chipset, and you've updated to Nvidia driver version 195.81 or later and you're still experiencing frequent crashes and freezes in Premiere Elements 8, then we'd like to hear from you in this thread. As mentioned in the announcement at the top of this forum, we believe most of these issues are caused by a problem with an Nvidia driver that was released after PRE8 was developed, and that the issues should be resolved by updating to Nvidia driver version 195.81 or later. Notes from the announcement I mentioned above are copied below for your reference.

Best regards,

Chad

-------------

For Nvidia users, there is a driver update that will fix both of the following issues:

  • Premiere Elements 8 does not restart after closing on Windows
  • Frequent and inexplicable crashes with Premiere Elements 8

To resolve these issues, you should update your GPU (graphics card) driver to version 195.81 or higher, by following the steps below.

1.      Identify which GPU driver you have by right clicking on the Desktop > Properties > Settings and in the Display field it will be displayed.

2.      Go to http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us and download driver for your GPU card. Its size varies from 80 to 120MB depending upon the GPU card model.

3.      After the download is complete, run the driver install Installation. This should take less than 2 minutes.

There are no known issues that the latest driver update will cause.

This is an announcement. There is a separate discussion topic located here.

***If the update steps shown above do not upgrade your system to version 195.81 or higher, then you may need to download the driver directly. Use the link below only if the steps above do not update your driver to 195.81 or higher. The download page for Vista and Windows 7 is located here:

The sticky message is now slightly misleading. It says correctly " version 195.81 or higher". The current WHQL version is 196.21 - so that would satisfy the 'or higher' tag. BUT the direct links in that message link only to the now outdated beta.

You should download 196.21 directly from nvidia - http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index5.aspx?lang=en-us.

It got shifted to the Share tab.

Thanks - there's definitely a UI issue in there then - I have a greyed out Export sub menu under the File menu still in present, which makes it look like the Export option isn't working.

Actually, there are still some functions for Export. IIRC, Titles can still be Exported via that Toolbar menu, File>Export. There might be other instances, as well, but the old Export for AV files is now all in the Share tab.

Hope that this helps,

Hunt

PS - I just found out about the now limited use of Export on this forum recently - maybe from Neale, or Steve? Before, I was complaining that it was a leftover from previous versions. That is not correct, as its function has just been limited, as of PrE 8.

Oh, you are not alone. I had uploaded some screen-caps of what the Export dialog screen looked like in PrE 4, when several people informed me that with PrE 8, one had ONLY the choice of Share. Oops! Guess who stopped uploading those old screen-caps, when a poster had PrE 8?

Actually, PrPro did the same thing, sort of. Back a version, one had Export>Movie, and Export>AME (Adobe Media Encoder), for many other formats. As of CS4, EVERYTHING now goes through AME. There is no more Export>Movie, for DV-AVI's.

Sometimes, it just takes time to get used to the new ways. If I post a reply on Export/Share, I still use both terms, in case a user with PrE 8 comes by, or a user of an older version comes by.

Good luck,

Hunt

I am still having problems with the Nvidia Drivers.  The error message says the driver stopped responding but has recovered but I lose all my data since the last save and Premiere Elements 8 never recovers.  It usually happens when dragging files to the timeline.  I tried the latest driver with no success as well as the 195.81 shown at the bottom of the forum.  I am running Windows 7 Professional - 64 bit.  I have the Intel Core i7-920 with 6GB of Ram.

Please help!

Scottszy - your problem sounds EXACTLY like my original problem.  I also am Win7 64 bit, also saw the problem when dragging items to the timeline, also wasn't resolved by going to latest Nvidia drivers.  Odd thing now is that my problem seems to be resolved and I have no idea what did it.  Adobe support suggested I try a clean install by using a special microsoft tool for doing clean removals of software - it ended up corrupting my registry each time I tried it so I had to restore my registry.   I then did a uninstall/reinstall of elements (which I had tried before to no effect). I then installed the trial version of CS4 (the big combined one) just to see if there were stability problems on that program as well.  There weren't, and then when I went back to edit some things in elements I noticed (after a while) that it wasn't hanging any more.  I've now uses elements quite a bit the last week with no stability problems at all.  So my thinking is that either restoring the registry to a previous version (it wasn't very old, though, just like a day) somehow "fixed" something or maybe installing all the CS4 software somehow updated some faulty shared library?  Neither theory makes sense, but about the only other thing I can think of is that aliens snuck in at night to fix it.

Good luck, Pr. elements is very nice when it is stable!

Chad,

I just installed PRE8 on a Dell WinXP/SP3 system (with ample memory & speed).  It crashes (disappears from the desktop) if I click on either NEW PROJECT or OPEN PROJECT.

I updated the NVIDIA driver to 196.21, but it is still doing the same thing.

Ideas?

Thanks,

I am running an AMD Phenom 9550 Quad Core PC with 2.20 GHz & 2.00 GB of RAM, and Windows XP/SP3, Video Card GeForce 8600GT. I have upgraded to Nvidia driver 196.21, AND turned off the hardware acceleration. The program still crashes if I want to do something as complicated as using a motion template for a one-line title over a slide. I think there should be a way to make the program more stable. I have to save every 5 minutes with another name just to finish a project.

Up here I copied and posted my PC's spec's.  Since upgrading to the new driver, my problems increased.  I seem to experience more crashes than before.  Happens randomly and I can not see a pattern.   (I have noticed dragging clips from one area to another on the time line is no-no)

A patch for Adobe Premiere Elements 8 has been released through Adobe Update Manager.

This patch addresses the following:

  • Crash on launch due to graphics driver incompatibility
  • Crashers because of GPU based errors in the application
  • Crashes during capture from DV/HDV cameras
  • Crashes during playback
  • Some intermittent crashes (during upload to youtube.com, scrolling through and using effects/transitions etc)

The patch is available through Adobe Update Manager or by choosing Updates... from the Help menu within the application.

Chad,

Thank you so much for the info, and the list of "fixes."

Greatly appreciated.

Maybe Steve can make this a sticky at the top of the forum, or at least a FAQ Entry.

Hunt

[Edit] Oops, it IS a sticky already. I'd missed that. Good job.

Chad,

Where is this update patch for PE8. My update manager just says that I am up to date and there are no updates?

I run a Dell XPS 410 with a quad Q6600 processor and 4 gigs of memory, Nvidea 9800gt graphics card and PSE8 and PE8.

I also run Windows 7 64bit.

I have updated to the beta video driver with more crashing than before. Video effects does it every time, drag video to track does it,

opening a avi file sometimes does it. After a month of use, I have yet to be able to burn a dvd. This should be the job of beta

testers not consumers that paid for this package. I have every elements package that you had put out (all full versions) and this is

the saddest. If you have any pull, please tell Adobe that I, as a consumer expect and would gladly pay for your buggy programs

as long as you issue fix's to make it right, I will not purchase PE9 whith the assumption that PE8 bugs will be fixed  and I have

to spend another $99 to have a program that actually is productive. Please fix the bugs in PE8 before trying to pass off PE9.

So with that being said, is there a place to download the patch? I have clients waiting for thier DVD's which I am editing with PE4.

Thanks for listening to my rant, but I cant keep paying for software that doesn't work. I have been an Adobe fan for years.

Thanks

Cheslaus

You should be able to just select Help> Updates... from the menu. I've

deployed the update on a number of machines this morning and haven't had any

problem getting the update by this method.

The direct download link for the update will be available in a few days. It

takes a little while to get it posted to the site.

You can also try launching the updater manually by searching for "updater6".

For example: c:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Updater6\Adobe_Updater.exe

Thanks for the news

- I am still using the version that came in the box dated August

(or is it September with USA date styles?) 2009!

I recently upgraded to the 195.81 Beta driver for my Nvidia GeForce 9500M GS GPU card.

Should I now upgrade to 196.21 or leave it alone?

I have found the only way to use Pre8 is to painstakingly re-import my avi clips one-at-a-time, preview each to verify audio is audible (if not retry), then drag each to the timeline and confirm audio again. Each clip is an atomic unit that does not have any pauses or dramatic scene shifts (like showing a browse button operation) because I end clips at such boundaries now.

Usually when almost done or several hours into this, Pre8 crashes still. Even if I keep saving project, on resurrection the audio is gone. I guess the design is to always reconstitute conformed audio each session? Unfortunately that seems to only work say 30% of the time successfully, so the multiplicative odds of finishing anything with a number of clips diminish exponentially. I am using avis with the Main Concept Adobe 2 H.264 codec.

I am considering to make some intermediate collages in another format that has more stable audio. What would you recommend with decent screen resolution like 1280 * 960 so the detail is not lost.

I am so hoping the patch(es?) make a difference when I get home and thanks again for the tips.

I've only owned the product for 2 days and had numerous crashes which led me to this forum. I was also getting that small red X in the bottom left hand corner that said "Display will be poor due to incorrectly operating graphics card". When I unchecked the GPU box the errors went away. I dont think we should have to uncheck this feature since my card meets the specs for DirectX 9.X, Pixel Shader and Vertex Shader.

I did apply the patch that was released today and still get errors and system hangs. They are not as frequent as before the update but as I type this the program is frozen and task manager reports "not responding".

I am running WIN XP-SP3 (32 bit), dual core 3.16 Intel, 4 gigs of ram, Nvidia 9800GTX+ and everything is writing to a 10,000 rpm Velociraptor drive.

This is really a major pain and an obvious bug. My system runs every other application perfect. I just did my annual reformat last week and I am running memory hog apps like audio workstation programs with no issues.

I would love to see the problem fixed ASAP. From what I have been able to tell PE8 has what it takes for my intended use but I will have to return the product if these crashes and GPU compatibility issues can not get fixed quickly.
