Re- rendering required ?

Premiere Elements 16.0 After rendering / saving and closing a project why is re-rendering required when the project is opened again. No additional changes were made, just saved and reopened the project. The rendering did not seem to survive being closed.

I would like to help you.....

There is no Premiere Elements 16. There is 15 and 2018.

Help me with explaining what you are doing. There is preview rendering so that you can work the project, and, separately, output rendering.

I am confused. Which part are you asking about?

I recently upgraded from PE 15 to PE 2018 iMac OSX High Sierra. It is interesting though that the file folder that contains Layouts and Styles and I assume other assets is automatically labeled 16.0 not 2018 - PE 15 is labeled 15.0. That's not important at this point as I know what files are in which folders.

Rendering -

While working on a project in PE 2018 Expert Mode and wish to quit working on the project for a time I click the Render button that is above the Timeline just to the left of the Fit to Visible button. The project seems to render just fine. I then Save the project and Quit PE.

When I reopen the project the orange "needs rendering" line appears and it appears the same clips that were rendered just before Saving need rendering again. Of course sometimes this is a long process and sometimes short. I am wondering why the "double rendering" is needed.

Or as you pointed out there maybe two different types of rendering that I am not familiar with ? ? ?

You are probably correct. The marketing people wanted "2018" to coincide with the naming conventions of the other Adobe products. It is the 16th version. If you are a Lightroom user you would be aware of worse naming confusion put on those products by the marketing people!

I too have had the orange line appear after re-opening a project that I thought was "rendered". I suspect it is caused by the disk space of the cache files being recycled. In the Edit>Preferences>Media and ScratchDisks there are changeable settings. Changing them should allow the preview files to be retained longer.

The orange line and the render button are related to the preview function. As far as I know, it is not related to final output. Premiere Elements has to work your computer pretty hard so that editing is smooth. Other systems use "proxy" files that are indexed in a way that smaller files are displayed smoothly while editing. Premiere Elements uses this automatic system of preview files.

When the orange line shows up it is suggesting that your preview might not be smooth and editing might be degraded. The preview files seem to be temporary and replaceable as needed. I think what happens is that the preview files are replaced when you "render". As long as your editing is proceeding smoothly, you don't need to render.

Regardless of what is going on "under the hood" if editing is smooth, preview rendering is optional.

Thanks ! for the info - I’ll look into the things you mentioned.

I sometimes have looked at my iMacs Activity Monitor when PE 2018 is rendering or encoding and surprisingly the computer doesn’t seem to be working that hard even on a larger project. The Monitor shows: disc activity ( reads and writes ) and percent of RAM used for each process and percent of CPU used for each process. Seldom do I see anything working at more than 50%, occasionally maybe 70%. I am assuming that the CPU is controlling the process and is holding some resources in reserve for any other activities requested while the PE processes are in progress ??? I am not a systems programmer, so that’s only my guess.
