Why does my Timeline show audio but does not play?

I have clips with music embedded and waveforms showing in the Audio line but can't get it to play.  What am I missing?  The mixer volume is up.

    Yes!  Please share the solution!

I had been having problems with PE15 crashing, I think during insertion of animated text etc.  I tried to install an update and seem to have lost both audio in video clips that functioned fine outside PE15 as well as noted randomization of numerically assigned JPGs - very frustrating.  I went to the forum with questions but being inpatient ended up calling for Help on the phone.  After some discussion and some hand-holding we changed the Preferences back to the 'Old' software and all my problems disappeared.  The suggestions re checking Preferences from Forum supporters was spot on though and for that I am more knowledgeable.  I can continue my video build.

    Many thanks,

    Bob

Make sure the Audio Hardware is set up correctly in the Preferences.

Could be sound card settings. I also had this happen, however it was working then it quit. The program settings were correct, and unchanged. It ended up being the sound card settings - for some reason they changed and only PRE 18 sound wouldn't work, everything else did.

Ended up tweaking the card settings and now it all works again.

I am grateful to all those who answered my questions.  Problems solved.

Just one further question: the comment "/please take a moment to mark

this answer as correct by visiting:

    https://forums.adobe.com/message/10801116#10801116 and clicking

‘//Correct//’ below the answer" /is puzzling to a new//person to the

forum/. / There is nowhere  to click 'correct'.  I must be missing

    something.

    Hello Bob,

I am assuming that you were able to hear the audio when you played the clips outside of Premiere elements. Make sure your track's volume is not muted inside Premiere elements. Also, make sure the system volume and volume bar on playbar is not in mute state. If you still face the issue, then please share the extensions of the video clips and your system specifications as well. I will try to reproduce the issue at my end.

    Thanks,

    Nidhi Bhushan.
