In case you've overlooked it, Midjourney now lets you upscale completed images 2x's or 4x's, thus avoiding or at least minimalizing artifacts due to upscaling on other platforms. But take note, it will be a take a big hit on your GPU minutes, since the upscale takes two to four minutes to complete. This does NOT mean that you can upload your upscaled images without giving them a proper review, as poor renderings of details such as hands and facial features will be magnified. SO YOU WILL STILL NEED TO EDIT THE RESULTS.

This is a feature that has been eagerly awaited. Not having to use another platform anymore is really great. But as you point out, images still need a 200% look at Photoshop before they are uploaded.

The 4x upscaler costs about 3 times more GPU minutes than the 2x upscaler is a lot of time !!

Don't forget: dubling the size of a picture adds four times rüthe number of pixels.

I haven't experimented with it much (too expensive minutes-wise), but giiven the time it takes to upscale 4x's, I would have to assume the entire image is being re-generated and not merely enlarged in the way a normal upscaler works.. I've tried it with at least three images and wasn't that thrilled with the results compared to Adobe's Super Zoom.  I think I accepted only one of the three. I didn't play with the 2x's, but if you consider that Lightroom's Enhance feature does the same thing for free, it's not worth bothering with if Lightroom is at your disposal.

MATH:

Native Midjourney size is 1024 x 1024px = 1,048,576 total pixels (1 megapixel)

x 2 = 2048 x 2048px =  4,194,304 (4 megapixels)

x 4 = 4096 x 4096px = 16,777,216 (16.7 megapixels)
