Hi Community,
i like to create images in banner format. It creates a lot of space for text and I also like the look of banners. But I'm always unsure which format I should use for a "wide banner". Both the ratio and the number of pixels are a mystery to me. So far I have made banners with 7168 px by 2688 because I have seen this in several portfolios. What do you think?

That may be what you like but that's NOT what most customers want or need. You're asking us to tell you how big is a piece of string. We can't. It's impossible.
As a stock customer and content creator, I must adhear to various project specifications. For example, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook & Twitter require different sizes and aspect ratios for various types of media. In short, there is no one-size-fits-all. If

The size is irrelevant (the resolution isn't!). Banners exist in all sizes and Banner design is done by the buyer. When I'm doing banners, I always need to adapt my pictures for that, either changing the aspect or adding sky or whatever needs to be added to make the asset fit. Most banners are vertical, some are horizontal.

I would recommend making variations in different formats. Different formats of the same “theme” sell differently. Sometimes it's the square picture that sells best, sometimes the landscape, sometimes the portrait. As a side note: I always preferred to do a portrait from a landscape picture, but never had good results the other way around.

To add to this: they also sell differently on different platforms.

Not exclusively.
From Stock Contributor User Guide:
https://helpx.adobe.com/stock/contributor/help/uploading-content.html
"Before uploading, make sure your image is at least 1,600px x 2,400px (4MP) and saved as a JPEG."
Also pay attention to top selling assets as that's a good metric for what customers want.

@Abambo is correct, but if you're talking specifically about Hero images, maybe this will help with respect to general guidelines: https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/hero-image#:~:text=Full%2DScreen%20and%20Banner%20Image,size%20up...
But don't second guess what a buyer might want to use an image for. Let them resize or crop to their own requirements.

That's web digitial. The resolution is overkill, even for high res screens. When I read banner it's print and kind of this: https://www.uspress.com/product/standard-retractable-banners
