Because ZIP is a container file and not a vector file format. Inside a ZIP file, you did put a vector file and a JPEG preview file. For some time now, the JPEG preview file got ignored, and the preview data got created from the vector file. Indeed, the ZIP file has proven to be error-prone, as some contributors packed the wrong preview with the ZIP file, and unfortunately the moderation did not catch this. But there was an error in the colour representation for generating the preview file, which has been solved by now.

In addition, Adobe added PNG files in addition to the JPEG and the vector files that could be downloaded from the vector file, so the customer has a wider choice, if they do not intend to use the vector file.

So, indeed, there is nothing lost with the absence of ZIP files. Upload your vector file and you're done. Check the artboard requirements, however, as that will determine the JPEG and PNG file sizes in pixels.
