That may seem to be a simple question, but having seen the prices, would I really be allowed merely 10 pictures per month for a $29.99 subscription to Adobe Stock? Are those assets referred to single pictures?

All Standard Assets. This does not include Video or Premium/Editorial images.

To make sure I understand this response.

• Standard assets mean all images which mean I am allowed to download as many images provided they are not videos or premium editorial images.
• I am allowed to download up to only 10 of Video or Premium/Editorial images each month.

Sorry for a delay in response.

Through the subscription plans, you may license standard assets (standard images, standard templates, and standard 3D assets). Subscription plans range from three standard assets per month to 750 standard assets per month. Premium assets, such as videos, Premium collections images, and editorial images or videos, can be licensed on-demand or using credits from a credit pack. You don’t require a subscription plan to license on-demand assets.

So with the 10 images per month(one-year) plan, you are allowed to license only 10 standard assets per month.

Also, when you subscribe to the Adobe Stock promo offer(10 images or 40 images per month one-year plan) the first month is a free trial, Adobe doesn't charge you for the 1st month; the subscription billing actually starts from the second month.

If you cancel during the first-month billing cycle, your credit card will not be charged and your service will continue until the end of that first month’s billing cycle. If you cancel within 14 days after the beginning of the second month’s billing cycle, you’ll be fully refunded. If you cancel the service after the 14th day after the beginning of the second month’s billing cycle, you’ll be charged 50% of your remaining contract obligation.
