How can I permanently disable AI-generated images showing up in my searches?

Explorer ,
Jul 06, 2023 Jul 06, 2023

I've noticed very poor quality AI-generated images showing up in my Adobe Stock searches. The only way to filter these out is to manually select a box "Exclude AI-generated Imagery" every single time I do a search. If I begin a new search it defaults back every single time to include AI-imagery.

I cannot use AI-generated imagery in my work as a designer. I am against the concept of it, and it's decimating the creative industries. Also, the images are horrible quality and not professional.

I need a way to permanently disable AI-imagery showing up in my searches. Adobe, can you please add this as a function to my account?

I also hope more creatives speak up about this in the comments below. I am considering leaving Adobe as a customer if they continue to push poor quality AI-generated content on their site.

There is no sticky option for any filter in Adobe stock. But there is an idea of the same with already hundreds of upvotes. Make sure to join that one and upvote.

Someone also created a small add on for chrome, to set the filter each time you visit Adobe stock. If I find back, I will post the link here.

This seems like a good idea. Be sure you vote on the original post. More votes means more likely to get the attention of the Adobe product manager who decides which features get implemented.

Bring on the vote. I refuse to use AI generated images and need this function ASA.

I posted about this topic months ago. My client just licensed a stock image of doctors, and when we viewed the hi-res shot, one person had three eyes and it was HORRIBLE. Adobe needs to stop pushing the AI. Its wreaking havoc on my workflow as clients approve lo-res preview images under deadline and when we download the hi-res image, they are unusable. It makes our studio look bad. They push AI because they can make more money and do not have to pay (the pennies they do pay) to actual photographers. Adobe STOP. ALlow me to permanently toggle off the AI in my search options.

3 eyes ... unreal. Totally agree with your comments. Adobe needs to fix
this. Period.

While the damage has been done, have you requested a refund on the purchase in question? If you post the asset number here, I'm sure you can get your credit restored.

@philipk88448296 ,

Contributors get paid the same amount for photographs and generative AI. Even if I agree with you that the quality of (a lot of) generative AI assets is terrible, and that the moderation team really fails with those assets, generative AI seems to be a commercial success.

Generative AI scrubs OTHER photographers images to create a final image—quite possibly yours or mine. Those photographers (and models if people are included) are not getting reimbursed. I respectfully disagree with you and also find the legality of commercially licensed AI to be dubious. The Supreme Court, and EU copyright agencies, will hopefully crack down on this at some point. In the meantime my students who are illustrators and photographers and use Adobe products are demoralized by their employment prospects in the future. I don’t understand why Adobe pushes products and images that actually undermine the financial future of their paying subscriber base. Big brother, are you listening?

AI is clearly here to stay. Artists complained when photography was invented. Photographers complained when Adobe Photoshop hit the scene. Everyone adapted and all are still thriving.

Hi—“nothing to worry about” seems to be a common response, but I disagree. Photography replaced fine artists with PEOPLE and those people made money using their tools (the camera) to produce images, as well helped launch the camera, film, and motion picture industries— AI is replacing people with ALGORYTHMS. I find that to be a key difference. Technocrats writing the algorithms will benefit in the short term but eventually even their jobs can be replaced by AI. I work in Silicon Valley and am seeing this first hand. I encourage you to do some deep reading on the topic as it will be a defining one for creatives in the next decade.

@philipk88448296 <> ... I
agree. People vs algorithms is a key point of distinction between
historical labor patterns and what we see occuring now. While we see labor
role obsolescence in history, it did not occur at the theoretical scale
that AI can bring.

Back in Adobe Stock Images. I was searching for a particular topic image
and couldn't find what I was looking for. So I put in a temporary (with a
note to the reader that this was a temporary thing) image from the Gen AI
heap. Its lack of quality stood out compared to other stock images. The
topic was covered off reasonably well in support of my written text. But
the image quality was off. It lacked life and vitality somehow ... there
was an assemblage of little things that left it almost plastic looking.
Somewhat like artificial plastic laminate woods vs real wood ... that sort
of thing. The discerning eye will notice it. It is like those poor excuses
for chocolate bars or cookies - I am old enough to remember what they
tasted like "back in the day."

I would have preferred that Adobe put development dollars in AI towards
their search engine, manual categorization and refinement of taxonomies and
keywords, or good old-fashioned photographic curation. Perhaps additional $
towards photographers which would increase submissions of quality work.

I'm so frustrated with Adobe Stock and the fact that I can't PERMANENTLY ban Generative AI imagery from appearing in my searches.  I NEVER want to use it, and I hate that I have to constantly filter it out every time I do a search.   This is something I should be able to set and forget in my settings.

Can anyone tell me how to reach someone at Adobe - who speaks English fluently - about this?

The few times I've tried complaining about it, the person I spoke with spoke English as a second language and I couldn't get them to understand what I wanted.

I agree. Users should have the option of selecting "sticky" Filters on the filter panel, or have some other way of permanently excluding certain results from their searches.

Please Adobe, take heed! This is the single most frustrating thing when exploring Stock images!

Excluding AI as default (or at very least including an option to exclude as default in settings) needs to be a priority for user experience, not to mention artists' revenue.

Please prioritise this ASAP!

I would like to see the left filter sidebar actively displayed on the first search page. That would solve a lot of issues, sticky or not.

You can't stop the progress. Best is to use it to its best. The history is full with people who feared that progress would cost them their jobs. Google "sabotage".

Do you really think AI is not being used in the motion picture industry? Do you think Marvel and DC comics could come out with super hero movies every six or seven weeks without it? 😉 Yeah, I'm exaggerating, but still.

Please make generative AI filter sticky. It's a waste of my time to constantly turn it off. Same with Standard vs Premium content.

Did you press the Up Arrow at the type of this thread? Apparently, the more votes it garners, the more likely that Adobe will pay attention to the request from Buyers.

Show AI as a label BEFORE hovering at the very least. Don't make me guess if it's AI. Also, make AI a TOP LEVEL FILTER. Put it right next to the search box and make it obvious.

We get it, if you can generate the images yourself you don't have to pay royalties to actual artists even though you trained your AI on the artists images... but for the love of god make it easier to filter out the trash as a default. Every time I have to disable it, it's after I search for something and find an image that looks nice as thumbnail, then I notice a detail that looks like a glitch in the matrix and say "damnit, it's AI". Then I have to waste another 20 seconds turning the filter off.

Please please please PLEASE, can you guys make including Gen AI an opt-in toggle in the search parameters? I am not even asking to get rid of AI but please just make it an option you choose, or remember the preference so that I don't have to redo it EACH TIME I SEARCH. Making it the default to include Gen AI for every search is aggravating and such a flow disruptor. Many of us CAN NOT use Gen AI in client projects!

Anyone who uses this software and looks for a lot of stock knows that little things like this add up and really disrupt your workflow.

When I send a client the stock site to pick out stock photos, they don't remember to exclude Gen AI and we have to go back and redo the search. The quality just isn't there with a lot of the Gen AI stuff, and if I do see an AI image I happen to like I just go make my own rather than spending a credit on something a prompt made. Lately I have gotten some incredibly weird and frankly disturbing images included in my image searches, like this one while looking for photos of sleeping babies:

PNG image.png

I appreciate the community updates that you guys have sent pledging to do AI ethically, but it's not an exaggeration to say that it's been forced on us whether we like it or not, and I really wish we could opt-in rather than opting out to use these tools. This would go a long way towards easing the tension. Adobe is supposed to be on the creatives side, but having to dodge and opt-out EVERY TIME we go to use your products is so annoying and exhausting and undercuts your whole claim. Please stop listening to investors and the C-suite on this one thing and listen to the people who actually have to use your stuff every day.

We've all seen this line repeated a lot already, I think it's not helpful and condescending since and OP isn't even asking to remove AI completely. We just want AI to be something you can opt into, versus it being the default.
