What is the best format to download images in, if I have to convert them using Mac Preview?

I do not have Illustrator, InDesign or Photoshop.  I am wondering what is the best format to download images in, if I have to convert them using Mac Preview.

I can do an export from Preview, into a new format, but last time I lost the high resolution. Suggestions?

Images or illustrations or something different?

• Images: Images are standard JPEG files that can be edited in a standard image editor (no need for Photoshop)
• Illustrations are either EPS files or Adobe Illustrator files. In this case, you need a program to edit vector files. There are some on the market, but unfortunately for you those files and especially the Ai files work best with Adobe Illustrator. Preview is for sure not a suitable editor for such images.
• 3D models are in Wavefront obj format which can be edited in virtually any 3D editor.
• templates specifically need the program for which they are made for.
