Question

Importing models from cgtrader: Applying textures and maps to materials / refl & trans

Hello,

I purchased some 3d models from cgtrader.

1)

They come with maps/textures that I cannot apply unambiguously to the substance stager/painter material surface properties.

diff(usion) = base surface/color and opac(ity) = opacity is selfexplanatory.

But I also have reflection textures: To what property do I apply this?

There are also trans textures... trans = transparency? Which property would that be?

2)

The models come as obj and different fxb files.

The v-ray+fxb files have the largest file size.

Is it always recommended to import the vray-fxb files or which one would you choose?

Thanks for clarifying some beginner questions 🙂

Warm regards,

Markus

Hi Markus,

and thanks for the question.

Substance 3D Painter only need a 3D mesh file with UVs information. Therefore, you should be able to import the .obj or the .fbx inside Substance Painter without issues.

Usually, the .fbx format is preferred because it can contains more infos (some textures, cameras, lights, etc.), but for your specific case, both should do the work.

As you said, The diffuse is basically the Base color, opacity is opacity, transparency is another name for opacity and what are the names of your reflection maps? Usually, you'll have a roughness or glosiness to setup how the mesh will scatter the light.

I am not a v-ray expert, but I don't think you'll need the v-ray files as long as you're not planning on working with v-ray.

And for the .mtl, this is a file linked to the .obj where texture informations are stored.

Tell me if you need more guidance and have a nice day.

Oh, short follow up:

I just saw that there are also .mtl and v-ray.mat files available.

Are those recommended to use as well?
