Hi Trevor

Only got it in yesterday, that speed is wired to the PC from the router, wireless is a bit slower, average for wireless 100/98 to 250/140 sometimes higher.

Just done a test downloading a 6GB file, started it and went to get some water from the fridge came back and there is was fully downloaded, I think it took about a minute and a half.

It's fibre direct to the home via the electric infrastructure more info

https://www.digiweb.ie/siro-powered-broadband/

It was the same price as my previous provider and I was only getting 38/9 with them

This is where I live

Wow. I think the best download speed I've ever gotten at home (and it fluctuates greatly) is around 180 Mbps. And upload speed is a solid 12Mbps (I think that's intentional on their end).

At work, we get around 241Mbps download and 45Mbps upload which is faster than I've seen anywhere else around here.

Blooming Heck that's fast!!!  Are you in Éire or the North?  I'm guessing you are south of the border, and enjoying some Common Market infrastructure, and that the North is barely above dial-up speeds.   Out of interest, where do you see the real benefits of that sort of bandwidth?  I mean what can saturate it?  Half a dozen 4K video streams?

We sort of consider ourselves lucky with this as it is so much better than what we used to get.  This is actually as low as I have seen it in a while, but best ever would be 49/12.

This is with VDSL+ so copper from the box, which is the small red circle.  We are the larger red circle, but the telephone goes down the other side of our close, and back on our side, so essentially doubling the distance to the cabinet.  Nowadays that doesn't make much difference to be honest.   What rankles is the fibre goes right past our garden (to the school at the end of the road) but they won't connect us to it.

Yes, those are grapes all around us, but so is all this

And this apart from the river and the town, and the valleys to the west and south which are each about the same again.

Actually, that is the highest speed available to me with Verizon (They call it "up to 10Mbps) , even though on a good day I can toss a baseball from home and land it in a Verizon substation.

Bob, I was going ask how far you are from the cabinet.  Do you know if there is fiber to that cabinet?

Your upload speed seems particularly slow, and I believe that makes quite a difference to download speeds.  We have a great site here called Geekzone, where NZ folk with an interest in all things tech hang out.  What is particularly useful is that engineers from several of the main ISPs are regular posters, and they will take up poster's issues, or at least give them the real situation for their location.

Before we got fiber to the cabinet we are connected to, that cabinet had very basic tech and a maximum 4MPS down and 0.5MPS up, and that was shared between every home that used it.   It was rare that we saw better than 1.5MPS down.   As soon as they upgraded the cabinet — which happened earlier than I might have done because of the school across the road — we were able to get ADSL2 which was way better, and very soon after that VDSL2.

I used to keep an eye on the cabinet for the Chorus vans (they do all the internet infrastructure in NZ) and stop and ask what they were up to, so we were the first property to hook up to the better connections.  Like someone else said, the VDSL2 speeds we are getting do everything we need in all honesty, but we'd still get fiber to the house if we could.

Heck!  I have just seen Andrea's post, and she is in the UK.   As much as I get annoyed with our main telephone company Spark, who are bottom line lead, and we'd still be on ADSL1 if not for government funding, I do understand that with only a million people living in New Zealand's South Island, which is about the size of England and Wales that has 50 million people, the cost of installing the internet infrastructure will be similar to the UK, but with a tiny fraction of the return.

Andrea, do you know how far you are from the cabinet?  What modem do you use?

No, we don't have fiber.  We also don't have FIOS available. There are even areas within a 30 mile radius from me that have no broadband availability of any kind.

I could get internet by the cable TV provider, but you have to get the phone, TV, and internet package to make it affordable and it's not a high priority for me.

We have a great site here called Geekzone, where NZ folk with an interest in all things tech hang out.

The variety of those forums is surprising.

To the OP, your 'ping' is amazing - 4ms? That's great for gaming!

Verizon FIOS here:

57Mbps down, 17Mbps up

That's on what is supposed to be a 25/25 connection.

Fast 'up' is critical for me, working from home. *critical*

Cable internet here is faster/cheaper down, but the upload is terrible.

I keep getting promo offers to increase speeds to 100/100 but, really, I don't need it.

The current connection is more than adequate (so far) for a 5 person family with many, many devices all often streaming from various sites.

John, is that right?  That's a crazy imbalance between up and down.  If there was a decimal point missing and it should have been 46.5/12 then that would be about right for VDSL via copper.

Our TV news mentioned that internet traffic increased by 30% in one month here in NZ recently, due to Netflix and Lightbox.  Goodness knows what the total daily bandwidth is for the world nowadays, but before we had the Web, I can remember getting angry about the 500Mb of Usenet data that circulated the planet each day, because so much of it was spam and porn.  We were all on dial up of course, and loaded software from audio cassette tape (that sounded a bit like a FAX machine).  It took half an hour to load a 10Mb file.

I can also remember Guy Kewney justifying the ridiculous 40Mb drive he had obtained, in a PC World article, but at the time, srive manufacturers were claiming it would be physically impossible to go much beyond this in a small form factor hard drive.  What are we up to now?  8Tb in a 3.5" drive?  Or have gone well beyond that now?   Hmmm..  I _had_ to go have a look, and Toshiba are apparently promising a 14Tb drive for this year.

Rodney, that is dire, and you don't appear to be out in the sticks.  What gives?

This article suggests that US Internet speeds are not flash all things considered, but it is a big, spread out country. You still appear to rated about tenth.  New Zealand is way down in 30th place, so I am just glad mine is as good as it is considering how far from town we are.

Trevor, for me it's a couple things dictating that speed. I am sort of on edge of sticks. Not far west of me it's all flat farmland type stuff up to the Rocky Mountains. Most of that is twisted pair or satellite. There's only one cable co. here (Mediacom) and one for the telephone (twisted pair). One for satellite. No competition really, so prices are high and come down a little only with bundles. I just get the internet so I got the cheapest one I could to keep the price down to $20./mo. I had to fight for that cause even THAT was a bundle thing but their advertising was faulty so I got a nice manager at Frontier to give me the price just for internet.

I just use it to read some newspapers and email and occasional googling of things to learn something. I send flash drives via mail to people to share big files. Being retired on fixed meagre income it's working out OK.

It will be interesting to see what happens here in U.S.  Net neutrality just got the Ax, and big providers are buying each other. Cell towers (with repeaters) are cheaper than running cable and fiber. I guess satellites will increase with cheaper delivery ( space X ). Who knows what will happen.

: )

That's cool that your school got fiber. Gives the kids way more potential to do great things.

I does seem more and more likely that large area WiFi is the future for out of town Internet, although it is ever so slightly scary to think of the signal strength required to give it any sort of range.  The receiving properties would have directional dishes of course, but the towers would have to be omni, or a big segment of omni.

This shows the lower part of the Marlborough Sounds.  It takes three hours to drive from Picton (where the ferries leave for Wellington in the North Island) despite the distance as the crow flies not being particularly great — the feint grid is 10 kilometres — to the northern shores of Kenepuru Sound (outlined in red).  The several hundred people who lived around the Kenepuru had barely any internet until they clubbed together, and had a wireless repeater put on a high peak on the range between Kenepuru and Queen Charlotte Sound.  The main dish is in Picton.

The result is surprisingly decent Internet. We stay in a lodge on the North Shore a couple of years ago, and I was surprised at how well it worked.

I can't resist a wee tangent here, but our trip to the Kenepuru was one of the most scary experiences of my life. My wife treated us to a seaplane flight to get there. It took off from Picton, and hugged the mountainside to get lift, but I was sat next to the pilot and could see bugger all out of the front, and felt I could reach out and touch the mountainside on our right.  I was sure we were going to crash into a ridge at any moment.

The seaplane does not operate anymore after he sank it in Pelorus Sound after flipping it landing on choppy water.  Not that I was ever going to get back in it!!!

Incidentally, the lodge now uses a picture I took during our stay there, in their main advertising blurb.  The banner came from a shot my wife took on a G10; the lights on the path are fake, and the windows from another shot.

Wow, that's neat. Looks like a line from Picton describing a fairly deep draft for ferry's and boats in and out... It must be really cool in some bay areas and kinda scary in other parts ( steep land down to ocean etc.). Probably great fishing and nice areas to just hang out. Picnics, photos, etc.

I miss the ocean a little. Lakes just don't cut it.

Nice shot of plane. I worked for a place in Denver as a prop mechanic when in my early 20's, and we had a super cub company plane. Flew for cost of fuel. A retired air force fellow worker took me up to teach me ( log hours). Same type plane ( overhead wing) but one guy sat in front and one guy in back). Couldn't see NOTHIN when climbing cause engine cowling blocked view.

For that matter, couldn't see nothin TAKING OFF either !  hehe... had to look out side window to see if you were close to staying on the runway !

Pretty funny.

That picture of lodge is beautiful !  Great job !  No wonder they use it to advertise.  Nice going !
