Royal Caribbean cruise ship in 2021

https://www.royalcaribbeanblog.com/2021/07/02/live-royal-caribbeans-first-cruise-ship-restart-the-united-states

My cruise is going out of Seattle to Alaska (skipping Canada due to the new, temporary law that allows not having to stop in a foreign port) and the requirement out of Seattle is that everyone 16 and above MUST be vaccinated, so the rules on the ship may be different... but going out of Florida (where a new state law prohibits requiring a vaccine) there are some special rules once on the ship... with, interestingly enough, different rules for the cruises out of the Bahamas where the CDC does not control things, the Bahamas goverment makes the rules

This is going to be my last ever cruise, since there is no other place I want to go, so I am going to enjoy myself while I go 'walkabout' in Sitka and Ketchikan and on a conducted trip in Juneau http://www.royalcaribbean.com/shoreExcursions/product/detail/view.do?ProductCode=JU33

2016 Explorer of the Seas from Seattle to CA and BC This cruise was with my wife

2018 Grand Princess from San Francisco to Mexico This cruise was with my wife

2019 Symphony of the Seas from Miami to Caribbean I went on this cruise alone

Oh I have always wanted to do the Aaska cruise! And I'm not even a cruise person, but that one really sounds great. Have  a wonderful time! Don't listen to those fault-finders and fearmongers trying to ruin it, which they do to everything else.

I have my $8,000 rain suit (*) to be ready if it is bad weather in Juneau for the shore excursion I mentioned above

I'm not going to do a paid excursion in Sitka or Ketchikan but I will go 'walkabout' if there isn't heavy rain

All the extra batteries I bought for my Canon SX510 picture/video camera are charged and ready

I will go to every show (have to reserve a seat on the ship) and also have a thick book to read

    I plan to enjoy myself

(*) I bought an $8k Harley and was given a rain suit as a bonus

Whew you are daring and bold.

Right now with all the variants... I would stay away from cruises.  God, what if you get stuck on one for additional time.

I think I would be scared to enter countries where they may not be getting vaccinations quickly.  Even if vaccinated, you still might pick something up and not get sick... bring it home and infect someone else.

But I pray for the best.  I do hope that I can travel soon..... so many places that I want to go.  But I have pretty much written off 2021.

I still go grocery shopping, where there are NO special efforts that I have seen lately to keep people safe... other than signs advising to keep distant

There are MANY safety protocols on the ship https://www.royalcaribbeanblog.com/2021/07/09/royal-caribbean-releases-alaska-cruise-ship-protocols-august-sailings

As well as what to do before boarding https://www.royalcaribbean.com/the-healthy-sail-center/getting-ready-to-cruise?dPort=seattle

So... going on a cruise is safer than going to my local grocery store

I received an email saying that no more than 3 days in advance of my cruise I have to go to my Dr to be tested for Covid, with a negative test result being required to board the ship, so I just called to schedule my test... which takes "24 to 48 hours" to process, so 1 or 2 days before I board the ship I will be able to go to my health record online to print my results... nothing like a new rule to add stress to the boarding process

I would be less stressed knowing that everybody else was tested.

Well, true... but one more 'hoop' to jump through between the dock and the ship

An early report on another cruise line https://clark.com/travel/celebrity-cruise-experience-2021/

August Serenade from Seattle to Alaska is a "vaccine required" cruise for all passengers who are old enough to be vaccinated AND all crew will be fully vaccinated (per Royal's healthy sail center)

The May 26 2021 CDC mask policy https://www.cdc.gov/quarantine/cruise/covid19-operations-manual-cso.html has a provision for no masks... Quote "For ships with at least 95% of crew and 95% of passengers fully vaccinated, cruise ship operators, at their discretion, may advise passengers and crew that they do not have to wear a mask or maintain physical distance in any areas"

So now I am hoping Royal will issue a new 'mask not required' policy for cruises to Alaska... which may be by ship, and after counting how many UN-vaccinated children are on the cruise, to be sure that UN-vaccinated children total below the 5% limit in the CDC mask policy
