Another person running 10.7 does not have this, so I believe this is with 10.8.2 & CS5 for sure, (though I worked somewhere else in 2012 and thought I saw this under 10.7). Anyone else running 10.8 mac & CS5, can you confirm you have this problem??? Really annoying.

Since Lion or Mountain Lion, we have had an annoying problem where the last folder location is not remembered in Illustrator. For example when updating links on multiple files, would like for the folder location to return to the last one used, but this would go to some folder 3 levels higher/ Found http://www.stclairsoft.com/DefaultFolderX/ fixes this. But hoping someone else has another solution as having to buy that for each computer would get costly for somethng that used to work. Also the software seems to not have bneen updated in a long time, adn don't wnat a solution that won't last. Am on 10.8.2.

Use import in corel draw. If that does not work, open in .ai and save down to something like .ai8 so corel can understand the file adn that will strip up reliance on the newer plugins.

This has been requested as a feature since 1988, but please try. One way around this On your text effects Effects >> Path Outline Object Preferences >> turn on use preview bounds Draw a box seperately Use the align palette to vertically center 2 objects This considers the height of ascenders, descenders. InDesign aligns verrtically based on half the cap height, which you may prefer. This workaround requires 2 objects rather than one, which I do not like, but has helped me in many sitiuations.

If you are on the mac and a Shift CMD 4 fails to capture what you need, you can instead use Shift CMD 3 to shoot the entire screen, or in utilities there is grab which can do a timed screenshot. Try to copy your selection, paste into a new document to see what appears. If some made an opacity mask in the tranparency palette, that also can do something similar, if the opacity mask square(one on the right) was left selected last.

Most likley you have a clipping mask selected. Use your layers and appearance palette to help deteremine what you have selected. Eiditng masks got to be cumbersome since they changed how masks work in CS5, and suspect that is what is giving you trouble. To edit the contents of a mask, you need to click on the 2nd icon below (circle with a dot in the middle), and also using selection targets in the layers palette (the round buttons left of the blue squares on my first screenshot)

If your atributes show center point weas off for every object that would happen. I doubt that is what happened as that would go away with a new document, and you mentioned the mouseover revels centerpoint. I only have CS5 here at work but hopefully my post helps you out. Try resetting your .ai preferences.

Yes. Load the .aso swatches into Photoshop, then use swatches palette > > Save swatches for exchange to make a .ase. You can then in Illustrator swatches >> open swatch library >> other library.

If you run into a file like that again where you can rotate the drop shadow effect with the transform tools, please share what you found. Though I have never seen different, am open to the possibility that an even better workaround exists. Your printer may get confused when they first encounter the symbols, or your fonts may not get collected with an older version of Art files is all else I found as the negatives of this method. I did not like the symbol method at first, but then other benefits arose like file size, quicker screen rerdraw, global changes, easy flavor line extensions, and confidence in your consistency against tight deadlines.

Don't blame me, I did not create the software, and have been reporting this since CS. Just create yourself a dummy bounding box fill & stroke of none within your symbol that is slighlty larger than your object. That way if you get for example a type revision, your symbols will not scale, cause the size of your symbol is defined by that bounding box and it did not change.

Funny you should ask just had to do this. I get around this problem by making a symbol of my initial object with drop shadow, then I just drag out symbol instances and rotating the symbol rotates the drop shadow also. Other items like gaussian blurs also scale so works good for holding outer glows consistent on logos.

The Adobe caches are located at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\TypeSpt and delete any AdobeFnt*.lst files. Do not delete AdobeFnt.db or FontNames.db!! Those are not caches.

Thanks Jeff. Great to see so much response to this post. The methods in 13 & 16 sped up files in some cases, but in each case they left residual infected useless code. Though deleting lines of code may take longer, and some appearance colors are lost, I feel more comfortable in erradicating this entirely. I have not had anyone send me files to fix since the CS6 patch has come out, but would definitely try that. Though there is no way to cleanse all files on the planet of this permanently, as designs get sunsetted and people delete their old files, this "Deleted Global Name" problem should fade into a distant bad memory.

You also may want to look into Artfiles. Artfiles is a standalone app, so you can package multiple .ai files with one drag & drop. Makes fitting on a disk or ftp'ing quicker so you dont have duplicate hi res images/fonts as with scoop. Scoop does cost about $20 less.

The CMD & Shift key modifier in the selection column does not work, but they work(kind of) if you click on the name of the paths. Would be nice if they were seelcted, but unfortuantley the actual objects are not slected jsut the path name. You then would have to use the flyout menu >> collect in new layer. This would reorder your layering though, so this may not help you. Jsut wanted to share the strange way this works.

Select all your elements, and then use the group command. This moves everything into the top layer and groups the selection. Then make a new layer, and drag the colored square after the layer name to your new layer.

This collection utiltiy works the best, and is well worth the small fee if you need to package .ai files on a regualr basis. http://www.code-line.com/software/artfiles/ Otherwise you will haev to do thsi manually by using link palette for fonts, adn if you have suitcase you can use that to collect the fonts, by the menu added to Illustrator i Belive is under type.

When you quit, Illustrator is trying to save your prefs, so try resetting your illustrator prefs. Or you may have a permissions issue, very common in WIN7, that is not allowing the prefs to write. Adobe OWL is a shared library that provides a consistent look and behavior to the user interface (UI) of those Adobe applications that incorporate it. The only problem you have at this point is viewing your PDFs shows the blacks as grey (though I am not sure how bad this is looking on your screen). Talk to your printer, as sometimes they run an entire job on a 4 color press and would allow you to have rich blacks at a minimal plate cost addition. Most printers can get a dark black on the 1-color line work artwork you are showing, as they run black heavy, but not too heavy so you get dot gain in your fine white sepckled areas. You don't have tints of black, so they should be able to get you a good enough black running 1-color only, but again talk to them as paper choice can be a factor in this. But clean up your blacks as Bo suggested, and you can find the problem areas quick;y using InDesign >> window >> output >> seperations preview, which is the equivalent of what he showed you in acrobat.

Yes ofcourse, just make sure you uncheck resample image before clicking on OK. You will notice no delay when you hit ok, because this is a very easy task for Photohsop and pixels are not being resampled. There are times when you will may want to resample(but that is antoher topic), and you will notice some processing time after hitting ok, the higher res image the more processing.

I believe the solution to your problem starts in photoshop. Most printers require resolution to be 2X the lpi (lines per inch) and the most common line screen is 150 lpi (133 or 175 are the next most common), so hence 300 dpi (dots per inch) standard resolution requirement. Open your image in photoshop >> Image >> image size >> uncheck resample image >> change your resolution to 300 dpi if it is not and save. I bolded that cause thath setting is very important, and you will need to become intimately familiar with hwo everthing in image size works. This unchecking will not add or remove pixels, but will adjust the size of your image if you change to 300 dpi. Now when you place the imahe in ilustrator, you will know that your image is exactly 300 dpi. If you scale your image smaller, no problem your effective resolution will be >300dpi adn that never hurts. If you scale your image larger in Illustrator, then you know that your resolution will be less than 300 dpi. You can now better assess the quality of your image reproduction.
