On Windows - next to the InDesign Defaults file: Users > [username] > AppData > Roaming > Adobe > InDesign > Version [version #] > en_US [or what is your locale] > InDesign Shortcut Sets. AppData folder is hidden by default, you may need to unhide it. Also check locale folder for other custom settings you may want to backup, like your custom Workspace, Document, Preflight, Print and other Presets.

Write your custom settings down (or make screenshots), loose it once (by restoring defaults), then tune it again, close InDesign, backup 'InDesign Defaults' file to some safe location. In case of future emergency just copy manually from backup your 'custom and working' version.

Okay, go further then! Preferences you restored are "standard". Most of us make some changes to it here-and-there, and we don't want to loose those custom settings every time InDesign stumbles for whatever reason. That said, when restored prefs are tuned again to your liking and everything is working just fine, close the app, find 'InDesign Defaults' file and backup it to some safe location. If prefs go wrong whenever again, you can restore your custom and 'working' one. Few years ago, I even wrote simple vbs to make such a restoring simple one-click action. Since then, prefs never broke

You still didn't say where that marking was done. Well, assuming directly in ID. I would check Conditional Text panel then: If Indicators: are set to Show, you will see the highlight, but it won't print nor export. In order to remove highlighting just remove that condition.

Did client marked it directly in InDesign file? Maybe that text has specific text style assigned? Or you placed already formatted text with some text editor? It's a kind of shooting in the dark without seeing actual file. Maybe you could discard formatting while placing, or, being in ID, select 'marked' text and copy all attributes from 'good' text (using eyedropper), or applying your own 'good' Para Style with no overrides. Thus you might be able to get rid of that 'marking' without even knowing what it was exactly.

You should deal with the WHOLE pattern, not only with the period before two digits... since that leads to problems, as you see. There's a lot of possible solutions. This will find exactly what you asked for, the '4' in lesson4: (?<=lesson)4(?=\s) this - any two digits at the end of 'lesson': (?<=lesson)\d{1,2}(?=\s) this (from CS6 and later) - any one digit right after the words that end with 'n': n\K\d\> and so on...

In Acrobat, try Save as... Reduced size PDF or Optimized PDF. How much you can gain from this, highly depends on the content of the file and your settings. To reduce the size twice... why not, sometimes possible...

Glad you're ready to go further Grouping not always "doesn't make sense". Say, you can "ungroup" at any time, but you can't un-combine (only undo), so be sure you're working on a duplicate! Also resulting figure gets attributes of the frontmost object, all others are gone. Combine won't work on grouped objects, too, so you must ungroup them first. Another thing, often all those steps I showed can be skipped - if you need only the final result - just ungroup everything, patch holes (or leave it), select all, combine. Especially when the figures are simple. And the last: there's even the script which does this job, but no need to bother for the one-time thing, I guess.

Sometimes, when I have no time to investigate, I just select problem object (Tasmania, New Zealand, etc. in your case) and just copy ALL attributes from an identical but "working" area, let's say, from Australia. This way you sometimes fix the problem even without knowing what it was...

Hm, now I guess I didn't really dig in what you're after... So you have some special words that are formatted in bold now, and there's no other bolds in text? You want nobreak applied to those words no matter how long they are? No need to bother with grep find/change at all. What I would do: 1. Find and select any properly formatted Blackfoot word (with bold and nobreak already applied, and whatever else it needs). 2. Keeping it selected click Create new style icon at the bottom of Character Styles panel, give a meaningful name to a new style that appears in the list. Let's say, Blackfoot. 3. Deselect text. Or click in / select target story - it depends what search scope you're going to define. 4. Open Find/Change panel. Leave Find and Change fields blank. Find Format: + Bold, Change Format: Character Style: Blackfoot. 5. Run it, and you're done (and this is the last time you'll need F/C panel for Blackfoot words ). 6. Now you can easily manage appearance of all your Blackfoot words via special ChStyle edits, at any time.

yeah, I see. well, that's one of the reasons they say logos should be designed in Illy. InDesign's capabilities are not perfect here, it's not intended to do such kind of jobs, after all. Aligning stroke to center would eliminate that hairline, but also it will eat the letters by the half of the stroke weight. It may be not acceptable. You're out of luck having that p at the end... I think, it's still possible to try playing with pathfinder: one (bolder) copy of text to cut out (subtract front object from back), other (lighter) - to paste in place. But it won't be elegant, anyway. And think again: do you really need the ability to place this on any background? If not, then Jeffrey_Smith and Obi-wan simplest solution is just enough, indeed.

Ok, here we go: 1. Convert your text „startup” to outlines (Ctrl+Shift+O). Give it a [Paper] stroke. The sequence is not relevant here, also you can not bother about stroke weight so far. 2. Select your outlined text, in the Effects panel, sub-select the Stroke only, and set its Opacity to zero. Your stroke „disappears”. 3. Group the green graphic element and „startup” together (Ctrl+G). 6. With the Group of these two objects selected, in the Effects panel, turn on Knock-Out Group checkbox. 7. Now your graphic element beneath the stroke should be knocked out. 8. You can sub-select outlined text and adjust stroke weight and alignment using Stroke panel (most likely you’ll want to set it Outside). Just don’t ungroup, knockout effect will be lost! Also you may find reasonable to do it with the first and last characters only, it’s up to you. Hope this helps.

Really? OP posted two versions - one with background, and one without. So - that yellow background is optional: it may be yellow or not, uniform or not. It may just be or not! I'm a bit surprised you find plain stroking acceptable here. Do you mean to edit it every time background changes? Here it is, stroked and outlined, directly in ID:

Actually, it can be done directly in InDesign, too. Cons: text converted to outlines (just like in Illy, and it's not necessarily bad thing for the logo); whole thing must be grouped (except background itself): As a general rule, I'd vote for making a logo in Illustrator... for various reasons. However, again: it can be done in ID.

No surprise here. ID user should have admin rights for robust action. If that's not possible, as a first thing to do your admin should set the entire Adobe preferences folder and its contents to be read/write, not just read-only. I’m referring to this folder: [drive]>Users>[user_name]>AppData>Roaming>Adobe Give it a try.

hi peter. You tried Find/Change, I guess? Imo, better approach is include this regex as a part of ParaStyle definition, then it works as expected: Pros: you can easily manage it at any stage of your work (edit, temporarily disable, etc.). If you still want to use F/C dialog, just add carriage return to exclusion: \w+[^\h\r]{25,}+
