I am not concerned about stroke inside or outside or centred in PDF, I am concerned that what is a stroke (aligned to inside) in AI becomes a filled object in PDF, whereas a stroke (aligned to centre) in AI remains a stroked object in PDF. A stroke in AI should remain a stroke in PDF, no matter the stroke's alignment, and it does not. Perhaps you misunderstood what I described.

This is a difference you see in print, not in the files. The visible difference may vary from printer to printer. The PDF and AI file look the same, as far as the "size" of the stroke goes. But you can see in preflight within the PDF that the object with the inside stroke is no longer a stroked object but has become a filled object. Again, I'd like confirmation from Adobe that this "feature" is intended by design in Illustrator, as Lukas implied, and that it is not a bug.

That is a real problem if it is how Illustrator handles strokes. A printer does not print a stroke the same way it prints a fill. As a result, there can be a visible difference for the same stroke size, whether it is centre-aligned or inside-aligned! Awful. Can someone at Adobe confirm that this is intended by design in Illustrator and not a bug?

An object (like a circle) with stroke aligned to centre in Illustrator remains a stroked object when saved as PDF. However, the same object with stroke aligned to inside in Illustrator becomes a filled object when saved as PDF. What? If this is standard behaviour, please explain to me the logic behind it. Otherwise, is this a bug? This is in CS4.

Illustrator rounds off numbers after some decimal points (I believe it might depend on the chosen unit but I have seen no more than 4 decimal points), for display. For example, 1.23456 becomes 1.2346. I think it uses the original number though for calculations, I am not sure. Can someone confirm? If I copy a rounded number in Illustrator into the clipboard, for example a number in the Transform Panel, and paste it elsewhere in Illustrator, would Illustrator be using the rounded number (face value) or the actual number (non-rounded)? I am under the impression that the number that is copied into the clipboard is the rounded number. Anybody has any insight into this?

It looks as though alt+drag in the Layers panel from source group to target group does the job. I would prefer to do it via the Appearance panel, however, if it was possible.

Is it possible to copy a single FX attribute from a grouped object to another grouped object, without affecting other attributes of the target grouped object? The FX is at the group level in the Attributes panel of the source object and must appear at the group level in the target object. There is a relevant thread at: https://community.adobe.com/t5/illustrator/how-to-quickly-copy-appearance-effects-from-object-to-object/td-p/4028007 and an Adobe document (section Copy appearance attributes between objects: https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/appearance-attributes.html but none have allowed me to accomplish this task. Alternatively, I can settle for copying all attributes of the source at the group level onto the target object at the group level. When I click on the source's Group icon in Attributes panel, and drag onto the target object, it applies the source's attributes to one of the objects in the target group, not to the target group. I have also tried Graphic Styles but they also apply the effect to one object in the target group, not to the group. This is for CS4.

Yes, it seems we have exhausted the options together in this thread and outline object is out of the window, unfortunately, as I prefer to keep the font. I will look for a workaround, which is likely to be the long-winded hard way. Thanks for your help Monika. It's funny that you mention "keeping the text live". It's what led me to believe for so long, mistakenly, that this would also preserve the font. I could not find relevant Adobe documentation detailing this topic.

I thought I was going to get away with it. Here is what I described. There is type (letter "r") created with the Type Tool. To that, I apply a rotation (Transform). Then I outline the Type object and create a fill behind the Characters. If I save that to PDF, it becomes vector graphics. I would like to preserve the font so that when I save to PDF, the "r" character remains as font, and all other visual effects are still there. Of course, everything needs to remain in position, as shown in the picture.

Hi Monika. Something similar to what I want to do is to: create type (a few characters are enough) with the Type Tool, rotate it (as Transform FX applied to Type), and create a background filled box behind it (with Outline Object applied to Type, and Rectangle shape applied to Characters under Type, all as FX). In the end, I would like to preserve the font.

Is there no way to "shadow" the type that gets the FX applied to (and that is outlined) by the same type, that stays as font? I thought that Outline Object FX was preserving the object (font here) and acting as creating outlines, without actually creating outlines! Alternatively, is there a way that the applied FX can be made permanent, preventing any more editing, but preserving the font?

Hi Monika, Thanks for your reply. What do you mean by "in the PDF part of the file"? Are you inferring that I can see what ends up being expanded directly within AI (without the need to convert to PDF)? If so, how can I see that? Up to today (!), I assumed that the Outline Object FX kept the font all the way to PDF/EPS. I discovered that it is not so and that it only keeps the font live in AI. Would you know of an Adobe document I could read that would further explain how AI handles this (outline and FX) in relation to this topic? The transformations I apply to the text (outlined and other transforms) end up changing only its position and orientation. As a workaround, and in order to preserve the font in the end, I would like to stick the same text (as font, without FX) right on top of the outlined text, but I am unable to position the text (as font) appropriately.

Hi Mylenium. Simply type a few characters and apply Outline Object FX to it. Nothing else. Convert to PDF (and choose to embed the fonts) and you will see that there is no embedded font in the PDF document. So even though AI keeps the font live, it does not remain in the PDF. If you happen to have another instance of the same font in the document, only without outline this time, then you may see a difference between the two instance (font vs. outline). This is why I would like to keep the font somehow, even though I apply Outline Object FX to it and further transformations which affect its position. There is no rasterisation here, only font and vector. Perhaps I can rephrase my question like this: when you apply Outline Object to type, as an Effect via the Appearance panel, is it possible to embed that font when saving from AI to PDF (as opposed to saving a vector version of the type in PDF)?

I eventually got around this problem not by doing any of the above but by saving to PDF and placing the PDF file in Illustrator, instead of the initial AI file I intended to place.

The stroke or fill can either be made invisible or set to none. Sometimes, it makes sense to me to maintain the colour (or swatch) that can come in handy later or if several objects share this characteristic (same colour), and turn the visibility off, rather than set the colour to none. As to "wether I would ever select several objects and apply overprint to all of their strokes or fills at once", that is not unusual either as evidenced by the presence of the command Edit Colors>Overprint Black. Not to mention that the artwork is fluid and you might find yourself changing your mind as you progress. Likewise, bulk selection enables you to reuse more easily as much of the artwork as possible for print or digital, or for various printing capabilities. To sum it up, I don't think there is anything exceptional about doing that.

I create a rectangle with black stroke and cyan fill, place it in the back. I create another rectangle with black stroke and magenta fill, place it on top and hide its stroke. I select both and check Overprint Fill. The cyan rectangle in the back has its stroke disappear (visibility is toggled off by Illustrator)!

So that bug has been there for at least 11 years! I reported the issue here. That's as far as I'll take it. I should add that although Edit Colors>Overprint Black>Add Black does not create this problem, it does not set overprint to top-level stroke or fill under Type, but only to stroke or fill under Characters. Conversely, selecting that same object and setting Overprint Fill and Overprint Stroke via Attributes will set stroke and fill to overprint under Type, but not one level below at the Characters level!

Hi Federico. I appreciate your suggestions and the work you did to show them. In my case though, they don't apply because this would just be too much work when you have several instances, and also, when a design is done (like the stroke being centred), it is no longer possible to go back and redraw everything with the stroke aligned to outside.

Everything I tried fails this way. I just tried with 1- rectangle with stroke and fill but the fill is made invisible, and 2- a line (stroke visible). Select the two objects, click one both Overprint Fill and Overprint Stroke in Attributes, and the rectangle's fill becomes visible.

Hi Monika. I have unpredictable results in print with transparency so I try to avoid it. I struggled through the German but figured out what you've done. My case is slightly different. You apply the background blue fill to the characters within type, which you've converted to a rectangle shape. As a result (unless you then also resize the height of the rectangle according to the font), the blue rectangle's size depends on the font. In my case, I have applied the background fill to the rectangle path (inside which I then typed the text), the size of the rectangle path does not depend on the type that is inside it. Any suggestions that would allow me to keep this existing design? I do like your idea of using Pathfinder FX (Subtract) here with Convert to Shape so even though I am unable to apply it, I learnt something! Thanks.

Hi Monika. The text is typed inside a rectangle (area type), the rectangle is then given a fill. Effectively, there's only one object. As a result, I haven't been able to turn it into a compound shape. I could duplicate the object and then make a compound shape but I was hoping there is a way to keep it all nimble.

Hi, I have text typed in an area, and the area has a fill. I would like to knock out the text from the background fill of the area, while preserving the text being live. -I don't want to use transparency features (it can be done that way with Knockout Group set for the object and Opacity 0% for the characters). -I would also prefer to keep the text as area type instead of having one text object and one background fill object. Is this possible at all? Thanks.

Thanks Federico for checking with CC 2020. What's wrong with version 14 and in what way does it impact this particular issue? By the way, if I select the artwork and do Edit Colors>Overprint Black>Add Black etc., it doesn't have the visibility problem I described.
